The King is dead. Long live the King. Texas Instruments, after a multi-year run as the leading vendor of smartphone processors has been replaced. Qualcomm is now on top, based on 2011 figures. The report, from Strategy Analytics, says that the total smartphone processor market grew 70% in 2011 in terms of revenue. Last year $7.9 billion work of product was shipped, half of which was a Qualcomm smartphone processor. This might not seem a surprise to our loyal readers, who might remember that back in July we told you that data from Strategy Analtyics revealed that Qualcomm had taken over the lead in smartphone processor market share from the fourth quarter of 2010.
Speaking of revenue, Qualcomm already was the leading vendor for processors built for smartphones in 2010 and repeated the feat last year. Samsung was next followed by TI and Marvell. For the first time in its history, Broadcomm made the top 5 list for smartphone processor revenue with sales that soared 500% over last year. Another name to watch is NVIDIA. With its dual-core Tegra 2 processor gaining traction, the company placed 6th in both units shipped and revenue. This year, the quad-core Tegra 3 will be in a number of smartphones, some of which will get to be displayed next week at MWC 2012 in Barcelona.
Speaking of MWC, we will be there to provide you with the most complete and up-to-date information. The expo begins Monday.
