There is no question, if you give smart, creative people low-level access to their favorite gadgets; you’re going to see some cool things. This demo is no different.
Android developer, Colin Edwards a.k.a. DDRBoxman, wanted to use a projector and a Kinect to build a giant touchscreen. He decided that it would be best to use an OS that is designed around touch interactions.
In order to get these pieces communicating with each other, he connected his Galaxy Nexus to a projector with a mobile high-definition link. He then used a PC to receive data from the Kinect via a program called Simple Kinect Touch. The PC then converts that data to TUIO commands that can be received by TUIO for Android to map coordinates. Obviously none of this is just simple plug and play as Colin did have to compile his own version of Android in order to replace user input with the TUIO commands.
He uploaded a video of the interface, which you can check out below. Overall, it’s a pretty cool hack.
