When combining tablets into the mobile PC category, Apple managed to not only be the lead PC vendor for the fourth quarter of 2011, but the entire year. The Cupertino giant shipped more than 62.8 million MacBooks and iPads last year. Out of those units, the iPad accounted for a staggering 80%, or about 48.4 million.
Behind Apple were HP, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo at 8.7, 6.9, 6.8, and 6.3 million units shipped, respectively. When looking at just the tablet side of things, Apple is the undisputed leader. In Q4 Apple managed to control 59.1% of the market, followed by Amazon with 16.7%, thanks to the Kindle’s strong showing.
With a variety of quad-core Android tablets launching in 2012 and the anticipated release of Windows 8, it will certainly be interesting to see if Apple can continue to maintain its stronghold on the mobile PC landscape with the iPad.
