Hundreds join rally in Pak to honour Osama bin Laden

Quetta:  Hundreds took to the streets of  Quetta today to pay homage to Osama bin Laden, chanting 'death to America' and setting fire to a US flag. Angry participants belonging to a religious party in Quetta, the capital of southwestern province Baluchistan, were led by federal lawmaker Maulawi Asmatullah.

It was the first rally in Pakistan after the United States announced that bin Laden had been killed in an overnight commando mission in Pakistan.

Organisers said between 1,000 and 1,200 people attended the rally, but witnesses put the figure closer to 800.

US used 'multiple methods' to identify Osama's body

Washington:  The U.S. used multiple means to confirm the identity of Osama bin Laden during and after the firefight in which he was killed, before placing his body in the North Arabian Sea from aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier, senior U.S. officials said Monday.

The Al Qaeda leader was identified by name by a woman believed to be one of his wives - bin Laden had several - who was present at his Pakistan compound at the time of the U.S. raid. He also was visually identified by members of the U.S. raid squad, a senior intelligence official told reporters at a Pentagon briefing. Under ground rules set by the Pentagon, the intelligence official and two senior defence officials could not be identified by name.

HTC DROID Incredible 2 Review

HTC DROID Incredible 2 Review

Introduction:

Conveniently aiding Android’s permeation to the masses approximately a year ago, the HTC DROID Incredible helped usher the beginnings of high-end Android love with its better than average specs at the time. Fast forward to a year later, we’ve seemingly witnessed a major shift in the landscape as Verizon is embarking on yet another journey to the top with their top shelf offerings. Although it’s basically the same as the HTC Incredible S that we reviewed over a month ago, the HTC DROID Incredible 2 comes out of the gate bringing some improvements over its predecessor – while being retaining its global stature as a CDMA device. However, it’s coming in at a time when we’re seeing devices like the HTC ThunderBolt and Samsung Droid Charge taking precedence with their next-generation hardware. Is it too late for the DROID Incredible 2 at this point? Let’s find out!

The package contains:

  • HTC DROID Incredible 2
  • 16GB microSD card
  • microUSB cable
  • Wall Charger
  • Quick Start Guide
  • Product Safety & Warranty Brochure

Design:

If you checked out our HTC Incredible S review, you’re not in for any surprises with the DROID Incredible 2 since its design is absolutely identical. Naturally, being slightly larger than its predecessor, the minimalistic design style is once again evident as it completely looks clean in the front, while being complemented with a subtle soft touch feel around its back. Even more, we see that the unmistakable contoured rear pattern design is in play once again as it gives the handset its sprinkling of character. Sure it’s one solid feeling handset, but it doesn’t come off as anything remarkably impressive since it follows in traditional fashion to other recent HTC smartphones of late.

Windows Phone 7 sales "catastrophic" at 674,000?

Windows Phone 7 sales

Windows Phone 7 sales are an elusive topic ever since the launch of the platform back in November 2010. Even after Microsoft announced its quarterly financial results, it remained tight-lipped about the actual sales of WP7 phones, but could the company have stumbled more than expected? According to Russian tech analyst Eldar Murtazin that's exactly the case as he estimates Windows Phone 7 sales at the disappointing 674,000 units. Murtazin doesn't specify the period, but by all visible clues he refers to data for 2010.

The analyst doesn't provide any details about the basis of his calculations, so take this with a grain of salt and more as an approximation as none of the phone makers or carriers has given an exact sales figure. But Murtazin does mention that unofficial data he got from carriers and retail chains is “catastrophic.” To put it all in context, Redmond has announced that carriers have shipped some 1.5 million WP7 smartphones to the market, but actual sales to the end-user haven't reached even a half of that number. And the gap between shipped and sold units has continued to widen in Q1 2011.

The analyst summarizes sales harshly as an expected absolute failure, laying the blame on Microsoft's strategy to try to compete in the already crowded high-end segment where iOS and Android have proven their maturity, while WP7 has been lacking basic features up until recently. What is your opinion on Redmond's WP7 platform? Don't hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments below!

Costco says Samsung DROID Charge will not launch today; Walmart leaks its price

Costco says Samsung DROID Charge will not launch today; Walmart leaks its price
On Sunday, we showed you a photograph of a Samsung DROID Charge sitting on a shelf at Walmart, just waiting for the launch that could come as soon as today Wednesday. Now, a leaked photo confirms the discount retailer's plan to offer the phone and shows the price at $288.88 with a signed 2-year pact. That is a savings of $1.11 from the price that Verizon has announced it would sell the device for.

As we reported, signs pointed to a launch of Verizon's second LTE enabled phone sometime this week. Now, a leaked screenshot for internal use at Costco screams that the DROID Charge will NOT launch Nationwide on Tuesday, hinting at further problems. The Samsung DROID Charge was originally expected to launch on April 28th until Verizon's LTE network went out on that day. Some speculated that the handset's delay was related to the outage and that the phone would be offered once Big Red's pipelines came back up. Even though the carrier's 4G service was back up by the next day, the DROID Charge has remained on store shelves, collecting dust. Now it seems we have a new delay and Costco says it will provide another update Tuesday on what is turning out to be an interesting story in light of the already canceled Motorola Etna (aka DROID Bionic) on Verizon.

Facebook App for the BlackBerry PlayBook Demonstration

Facebook App for the BlackBerry PlayBook Demonstration

Maturing very slowly with each passing day, one of the biggest complaints that we continue to have with the BlackBerry PlayBook is the lack of top shelf apps available for the tablet – and it's still evident even right now! For most social networking driven individuals out there who pick up the PlayBook, they’ll be at a standstill knowing that popular official apps like Twitter and Facebook are still missing. Fortunately for them, RIM recently announced the availability of the latter; and the timing couldn’t have been any better!

Available for download through the BlackBerry App World right now, the official Facebook app for the PlayBook is ready for the taking as it offers a genuine and typical experience that we have come to expect with mobile friendly versions of the app. Running it for the first time, its interface isn’t dramatically different from what’s seen with other versions of the app – like iOS, Android, webOS, and Windows Phone 7.

Surprisingly enough, it doesn’t quite take advantage of the tablet’s size since it’s fairly similar to other mobile versions of the app. In fact, we’re first greeted to the news feeds page, which aggregates all the content in one place. From here, you’ll be able to accomplish of things like reading various posts, commenting on items, “liking” stuff, setting your own status message, and uploading photos. In the top bar, you have the menu button in the upper left that provides access to things like your profile, friends list, messages, chat, and photos. Meanwhile, the notifications, incoming chats, and settings buttons are all positioned in a row in the top right corner.

Without a doubt, this is much more user friendly and intuitive versus having to rely on using the web based version – though, its presentation and functionality eerily looks and feels like any smartphone out there. Knowing that it’s the first time we’re seeing it, there’s no arguing that we’ll see it refined more down the road, but in the meantime, it’s the best thing available right now for the QNX based platform. Check out our video demonstration below!

RIM says new BlackBerry 7 OS browser faster than the one on Apple iPhone and Android

RIM says new BlackBerry 7 OS browser faster than the one on Apple iPhone and Android
During a slide presentation at the BlackBerry World conference introducing the new 7 OS, RIM showed off a slide that claims that its new browser is faster than the one on the Apple iPhone and Android handsets. RIM has taken its browser performance quite seriously. At one time, the BlackBerry browser would choke on JavaScript and web sites would crawl to a stop while being downloaded. Now, the SunSpider JS test shows that the browser on the BlackBerry 7 OS executes JavaScript faster than any other mobile browser.

According to RIM, the new browser is, "now one of the elite browsers in mobile today" with pages loading 1.6 times faster than seen with the browser on BlackBerry 6 OS. Changes to the software optimizes WebKit while new hardware increases browser speed. The faster zooming and panning leads to fewer cases of "checkerboarding" or the visual checkerboard type image that comes when the browser speed is slower than the speed that you are navigating the browser at.

The just announced BlackBerry Bold 9900 will be powered with BlackBerry 7 OS and the average web page loads in 7.81 seconds on the phone compared with 12.4 seconds on the BlackBerry Torch 9800. And as far as the JavaScript readings are concerned, the SunSpider test showed the BlackBerry Bold 9900 executing in 2.84 second, the Apple iPhone in 3.23 seconds and Android handsets coming in at 5 seconds. The BlackBerry Torch 9800? How about 10 seconds.

RIM thought that the Torch would take BlackBerry to the same level as the iPhone and Android. Kudos to RIM for realizing that they were still far short and coming up with the new OS that could put BlackBerry on the map once again.

AT&T adds new features to its Smart Limits for Wireless program

AT&T adds new features to its Smart Limits for Wireless program
Many young children have been given their own cellphone by their parents. But it is a double-edged sword. On one hand, the phone allows a parent to keep in constant contact with a child and allows the child to call in case of an emergency. On the other hand, walking around with a phone-especially a model with access to the internet and email, can leave your kid open to receiving certain inappropriate messages via talk, text, email or through the web.

AT&T has improved and added new features to its Smart Limits for Wireless product that gives parents control over certain functions. The carrier has doubled the amount of phone numbers that parents can block. Now, a parent can prevent his kid from calling or texting to 30 specific phone numbers. Worried about the apps that your children might download either because of content or cost? AT&T will allow you to prevent your kid from downloading apps on his/her phone by putting a dollar limit on downloads that can be purchased.

If your cellphone bill has been higher than normal, it could be from calls that your young ones are making to 411. Smart Limits for Wireless will now allow you to block 411 access to your kids. And if you're worried that all your son or daughter wants to do is lie around the house texting all day, the program allows you to set a certain time of day when texting will be disabled on your child's handset. Or, you can restrict the number of texts and IM's sent and received each billing cycle to a specific number. If your concern revolves around inappropriate web sites, you can block certain web pages with content filters and web usage can be controlled by putting a specific amount on how much data your kid can access in one billing cycle.

The AT&T Smart Limits for Wireless is $4.99 per month and does have some restrictions. The service will not block any data while the user is on Wi-Fi (don't tell that to the young ones), nor will it work with PTT, BlackBerry email or BlackBerry connect.

Consumer Reports: Both black and white Apple iPhone 4 models are exactly the same size

Consumer Reports: Both black and white Apple iPhone 4 models are exactly the same size
Consumer Reports may have decided not to include the Apple iPhone 4 in its rankings of smartphones because of the left-handed
death-grip, but they did decide to play a part in an ongoing controversy involving the size of the original black unit and the recently released white model. As you might recall, there have been many in the cellphone industry who have come to the conclusion that the white version of the iPhone 4 is .2mm thicker than the black version. Whether or not it is an optical illusion, it does indeed look like the white model has a little more girth than the original unit. As we reported Sunday, Apple's senior vice-president of product marketing, Phil Schiller, said of the white Apple iPhone 4, "It is not thicker, don't believe all the junk that you read."

The not for profit organization figured that no one would get any sleep without knowing the truth. One of the researchers at CR pulled out a caliper from his pocket protector and found out that both phones were .37 inches thick. Cases that Consumer Reports purchased for tests on the device are fitting both phones the same. So despite what some might think, numbers don't lie and the numbers say that both the black and white Apple iPhone 4 models are the same size. Case Closed. Now, you can get some sleep tonight.

Motorola DROID X2 & DROID 3 appear in Best Buy's system

Motorola DROID X2 & DROID 3 appear in Best Buy's system
There’s no hiding the fact that Motorola is on the rampage of getting quite a few Android devices out to market, but information regarding the Motorola DROID 3 and DROID X2 have been relatively skimp thus far.

Even though we’re still waiting for an official confirmation from Big Red about their existence, Best Buy’s internal system provide us some additional pieces of information. Specifically, their data transfer system has been recently updated, and looking at the photo below, we find both the Motorola DROID 3 and DROID X2 available as selections – with respective model numbers of XT862 and MB870.

Now that the two are showing up in their Cellebrite system, it could potentially mean that an imminent launch could be on the horizon – then again, it makes you wonder Verizon’s strategy. Specifically, we’re itching to know if the two will launch close to the same time, or rather, be spaced apart to sufficiently maximize sales.

Virgin Mobile Canada announces that they will be getting the BlackBerry Bold 9900
Being the talk of the town all day, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 could literally be the dream device that hardcore BlackBerry users have been waiting for – especially when its hardware specs fall in line with the competition out there.

Being a Canadian company and all, it’s only natural to expect the upcoming device to be sold by any number of carriers north of the border. However, we’re can solidly say that it’s coming to Virgin Mobile Canada some time in the near future since they confirmed the news through their Twitter account. In addition, taking into account that Virgin Mobile Canada is owned by Bell, one can make the assumption that it’ll be coming to them as well.

Although there was no mention of pricing or availability, the news about it coming to Virgin Mobile Canada will nevertheless get some people excited about its eventual arrival.

Google has Good Humor; next OS release nearly confirmed as Ice Cream Sandwich

Google has Good Humor; next OS release nearly confirmed as Ice Cream Sandwich
As we have reported, the next build of the Android OS is expected to be nicknamed Ice Cream Sandwich. This continues the tradition of naming each new build of Google's open source OS after a dessert in alphabetical order. We have seen Cupcake, Donuts, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb and now the sweet taste of Ice Cream Sandwich.

While not officially announced by the Mountain View based company, in a reply to an emailed question about an unknown issue by an AOSP forum member, Google's Romain Guy replied, "A bug fix will be provided in Ice Cream Sandwich." We could get confirmation at the approaching Google I/O.

While the image of ice cream and bugs doesn't really sound appealing, the race is already on to guess the dessert to be used for the software version after Ice Cream Sandwich. Jellybeans, anyone?

HTC ThunderBolt software update is scheduled to roll out starting tomorrow; May 3rd

HTC ThunderBolt software update is scheduled to roll out starting tomorrow; May 3rd
With the upper hand of being Verizon’s very first 4G LTE smartphone, the HTC ThunderBolt has seemingly gotten plenty of face time thanks to its larger than life status, but as we’ve pointed out a couple days ago, Big Red is very close to sending out an OTA update for it.

Luckily, ThunderBolt owners can expect to see the software update being pushed out starting tomorrow, May 3rd. As we’ve mentioned previously, it’ll basically pack along enhancements for connectivity to Big Red’s 3G network when 4G LTE is unavailable. Additionally, we’ll see a host of other bug fixes and improvements that should make the prized handset even more stable. However, it still won’t fix its vociferous battery sipping appetite – meaning, you’ll still have to live with its atrocious battery life.

Nonetheless, it shouldn’t be long now before owners begin to see that notification pop up on their handsets – so be sure to check it out tomorrow.

Press event being held in NYC on May 5th by AT&T & Samsung could point to the Infuse 4G
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the Samsung Infuse 4G, which we happened to check out way back in January during CES, but during the time since then, we’ve seen plenty of next-gen devices gearing up for their official unveilings.

So far, we’ve seen the AT&T bound smartphone making its way to the FCC, and more recently, it’s believed to be launched by Walmart some time this month. With that in mind, it seems that the press event being held in New York City on May 5th by Samsung and AT&T just might point to the undeniable reality that we might soon see an official unveiling of the Samsung Infuse 4G. Invites are being sent out to various media outlets for this “special announcement,” but it only provides the notion of product demos and executive remarks being made at the event.

Interestingly enough, the event could possibly be related to other things aside from the Infuse 4G – like some sort of tablet or an AT&T version of the Nexus S. Whatever it is, we’ll surely know soon enough about it seeing that it’s taking place in just three days from now.

Carphone Warehouse exorbitantly prices the LG Optimus Pad at £799

Carphone Warehouse exorbitantly prices the LG Optimus Pad at £799
Both Japanese and US consumers have the privilege right now to experience the 3D video recording abilities of the LG Optimus Pad (T-Mobile G-Slate), while the rest of the world is still patiently waiting for their turn at it.

Fortunately though, it seems that the UK is the next stop on the list as Carphone Warehouse currently holds in possession stock of the prized tablet – though, it’s still uncertain whether they’ll actually ship one right away if you happen to place an order right now. Interestingly enough, Carphone Warehouse prices the SIM-free tablet at the exorbitant price of £799 ($1,330). At that level, it might literally keep people at bay since it’s priced even higher than the iPad.

Nevertheless, we’d imagine that’s the premium that you’ll have to endure in order to be an early adopter of this Android 3.0 Honeycomb powered device.

Secret Best Buy pre-sale of HTC EVO 3D starts today

Secret Best Buy pre-sale of HTC EVO 3D starts today
An internal memo circulating through Best Buy stores (on a need to know basis, presumably), states that the HTC EVO 3D can be pre-ordered from the big box retailer starting today. However, the pre-order is not being promoted and there are no signs about it being put up in the stores. Reps cannot mention the device until it is official announced. Customers must come into the store and ask about the phone and the pre-order in order to reserve an HTC EVO 3D. Otherwise, as the memo says, "mum's the word".

So what do you get with the HTC EVO 3D? Well, right off the bat the device is powered by Android 2.3 and under the hood is a 1.2GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor. The EVO 3D has a 4.3 inch screen which gives you a good look at the 3D pictures that you can take with the dual 5MP cameras on the back. And, as the memo says, it is the first handset pre-loaded with the 3D version of the Blockbuster onDemand app.

Remember, this is all secret hush-hush stuff. So if you plan on going down to your local Best Buy to pre-order the HTC EVO 3D, just remember to whisper. And to wrap things up, we still do not have a launch date or price from Sprint for the device. The HTC EVO 3D is expected to be released sometime this summer which means it will be at least another 6 weeks until you have the phone in your hands. Just don't forget to act surprised when you get it.

Apple to shortly release iOS 4.3.3; update deals with location tracking bug

Apple to shortly release iOS 4.3.3; update deals with location tracking bug
Apple is not wasting anytime to make good on its promise to stop a bug that was storing location database data of iPhone and iPad 3G users to iTunes. The company has sent a pre-release version of iOS 4.3.3 to BGR. The update, which is expected to be launched sometime within the next two weeks, will also delete the location database file when the location services button is turned off, and will also improve battery life and fix bugs related to the Apple iPod.

With the new update, the software will no longer back up the location database file, consolidated.db to iTunes when an iPhone users syncs his iPhone or iPad 3G. In addition, iOS 4.3.3 will shrink the size of the consolidated.db file and limit the amount of time that the information will be stored. This is in response to a bug that allowed for the storage of up to 1 years worth of Wi-Fi hot spot and cell tower locations although the iPhone manufacturer insists that the file was not sent anywhere. Apple says that no more than 7 days of data is needed for the iPhone. The bug also failed to stop saving location data when the location services button was off. The tech giant said that the next major iOS software update would encrypt the data to prevent third party use of the information.

The location data storage issue has been a hot topic in Washington over the past two weeks. As we reported, Verizon will be putting a removable sticker on all of its new phones warning about the collection of location data and the possibility that it could be used to identify the user of the phone. A scheduled May 10th hearing in the Senate on mobile privacy will include appearances by representatives for both Apple and Google.

nDrive is the first data-free navigation solution for webOS 2.0

nDrive is the first data-free navigation solution for webOS 2.0
There are many GPS solutions for your mobile device. There are carrier-specific ones, like VZ Navigator, or the free Google Maps Navigation for Android devices. But, until last week, webOS 2.0 has lacked a data-less solution. The 'nDrive' data-less solution is good because it stores all the maps on your device, so you only need GPS signal to receive route guidance.

If you've ever used data-derived GPS on your device, you know that the data connection can sometimes wane, and you're left wondering what to do next. But a data-less solution doesn't have that problem. When you are connected to your network, 'nDrive' offers weather alerts, route sharing, and support for Facebook Places and Foursquare.

Also, you can take the 'nDrive' GPS solution with you internationally, without needing to purchase data service. But international maps will cost you extra, above the already daunting US$49 pricetag. But if this is in lieu of a standalone unit, you're still getting a pretty good deal.

So what are the disadvantages? For one thing, 'nDrive' allows favorites, but it won't let you search directly from your contacts application. Secondly, the U.S. map alone takes up 2.3GB. And finally, additional maps are expensive, e.g. the Mexico map costs US$37.

PCMag tours the country comparing wireless networks

PCMag tours the country comparing wireless networks
PCMag is doing their annual field comparison of mobile networks, but this year is going to be a little different. Rather than using laptops, as they have in past years, PCMag is using only smartphones. And what is their operating system of choice? Android 2.2, of course. But don't take that as a show of favoritism. It's just so that people don't try to make the competition about devices instead of networks.

The test devices will include the LG Optimus C (Cricket), the Samsung Galaxy Indulge (MetroPCS), the HTC ThunderBolt (Verizon), the HTC DROID Incredible (Verizon), the Samsung Galaxy S 4G (T-Mobile), the HTC EVO 4G (Sprint), and an unnamed HSPA+21 device with AT&T. They note that the only device with dissimilar specs is the LG Optimus C, and that's simply because it's the best Cricket has to offer.

The 21 cities in question are Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., Charlotte, Nashville, Jacksonville, South Florida, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

If you want to tell the team about notorious dead spots, or even get them to test the speeds in your neighborhood, they'll be tweeting from @pcmphones throughout their journey. Let the network war begin!

Best Buy claims BlackBerry PlayBook sales have far exceeded its expectations

Best Buy claims BlackBerry PlayBook sales have far exceeded its expectations
It's not very often that we hear something explicitly positive of RIM's PlayBook, but here comes a good news at last - Best Buy says the PlayBook's sales have far exceeded its expectations.

A statement issued by the retailer says that "Best Buy has had great success selling BlackBerry smart phones in North America, so our sales expectations for the BlackBerry PlayBook were very high". It goes on, claiming that "to date, we have far exceeded those expectations and we’re finding that customers are even more interested in purchasing once they’ve tested the PlayBook in the store".

As you can see, Best Buy didn't bother to release any exact figures to back up these claims - either about its "very high expectations" or about the actual sales of the device, but nevertheless this is a good news for the embattled manufacturer.
