Climate change could wipe out red wine by 2050

London: Clarets may soon become a thing of the past, as they have joined polar bears, glaciers and icebergs on scientists'' extinction risk list because of global warming.

Experts said the steady rise in temperatures threatens the vineyards around Bordeaux producing some of the most esteemed and expensive wines on earth.

By 2050 the region may be unsuitable for winegrowing at all, making chateaux such as Lafite, Petrus and Latour redundant and their supreme wines mere memories, said experts.

Previously, Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine reported that winegrowers are already switching to heat-resistant grape varieties as a precaution.

“The most pessimistic scenario says that the climate will no longer be suitable for Cabernet and Merlot wines by the middle of the century,” the Daily Mail quoted Jean-Pascal Goutouly, a wine expert at the French National Institute for Agricultural Research in Paris, as saying.

“The pessimistic scenario indeed shows that Bordeaux''s climate, by 2050, will no longer favour Cabernet and Merlot the backbone varietals of the region''s red wines,” said Goutouly.

Bordeaux winegrower Philippe Bardet added, “If climate change comes quickly, things will get difficult for all of us. If it comes slowly, we will adapt.”

Steve Jobs unveils Apple iPad 2

San Francisco: A frail Steve Jobs made a brief appearance today after a prolonged medical leave to unveil the iPad 2, a thinner and lighter version of Apple's popular tablet, which goes on sale from March 11 in the US.

Underscoring the tablet's importance to Welcomed with a standing ovation, the 56-year-old Apple Chief Executive, who has been on medical leave since January, made his surprise appearance at a company event in San Francisco.

Wearing his signature black turtleneck and blue jeans, Jobs began the over 70-minute event by saying, "We've been working on this product for a while and I just didn't want to miss today. Thank you for having me."

The new iPad, available in black and white, costs the same as the first version -? USD 499 to USD 829. It will ship in the US on March 11 and in 26 other countries, including Mexico, New Zealand and Spain, on March 25. It comes with front and rear cameras, a feature which was missing in the first model. It has a new Apple-designed chip that performs standard calculations twice as fast as its predecessor and offers a nine-fold boost in graphics performance.

China says it wants green growth within 5 yrs

Beijing: China, the world's biggest polluter, plans to "go green" in the next five years, emphasising energy efficiency and the battle on its choking pollution in its plans to revamp the economy, experts say.

The so-called 12th five-year plan -- already approved by Communist Party leaders -- is expected to be reviewed and rubber-stamped by delegates to the National People's Congress, which opens its annual session Saturday in Beijing.

"We must not any longer sacrifice the environment for the sake of rapid growth and reckless roll-outs," Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday, warning that doing so would result in unsustainable growth and the depletion of resources.

China's total carbon dioxide emissions, which it finally admitted last year are the largest in the world, increased by 32.5 percent between 2006 and 2009, according to the US Energy Information Administration, a government agency.

Beijing has already launched an ambitious programme to develop clean energy and shut down factories that fail to meet emissions targets.

It also wants to reduce its energy consumption per unit of GDP, or carbon intensity, by 40 to 45 percent by 2020 based on 2005 levels -- essentially a vow of greater energy efficiency, but not an absolute cap on emissions.

US Discovery astronauts step out on last spacewalk

Washington: Two US astronauts has stepped out on the second and final spacewalk of the Discovery shuttle mission at the International Space Station to work on repairs at the orbiting lab.

"Once again rock stars, very impressive work today," said astronaut Nicole Stott, who choreographed the spacewalk from inside the space station, as the pair wrapped up their work after six hours and 14 minutes, yesterday.

Steve Bowen and Alvin Drew embarked on their second spacewalk together at 2112 IST to complete work on a failed ammonia pump, remove installation on the Tranquility module and install spare parts on the Canadian robot Dextre.

The walk was briefly delayed by a minor leak in American Steve Bowen's spacesuit, caused by a faulty O-ring seal in a lithium hydroxide canister that scrubs out carbon dioxide. A new O-ring was installed to replace it.

Bowen was a late addition to the six-member US crew that blasted off aboard the Discovery on February 24, after astronaut Tim Kopra was injured in a bicycle accident. Kopra, who was standing with the help of crutches, was among colleagues at mission control in Houston yesterday, and NASA said he would be "helping out" with the spacewalk from there.

Tuesday was Drew's second spacewalk and marked the seventh for Bowen.

The Discovery shuttle is the first of three US shuttles set to become museum pieces later this year.

Endeavour is to lift off on April 19 followed by Atlantis on June 28, marking the official end of the US space shuttle program after 30 years.

Strauss rues bowling and fielding for shock loss

Bangalore: A disappointed England captain Andrew Strauss blamed poor bowling and fielding for his side`s three-wicket loss at the hands of Ireland here and said they will have to quickly address the chinks if they want to go the distance in the cricket World Cup.

"Generally we bounce back and in the past too. We have done that in Test and one-day cricket. We can be challenging and realise where we could prove. We need to galvanise and we cannot afford any slip up in our remaining matches," Strauss said at the post-match press conference.

"We dropped Kevin (O`Brien) and three other catches in the game. Our bowlers could have been better during power play. We were taken by surprise there. You cannot afford to give away so many chances. If you drop a batsman before, it is hard to get his wicket. It is asking for trouble," he said.

Strauss gave full credit to the Ireland team for their victory but said another 10-15 runs more (than 327) would have made the difference.

"It is definitely a disappointing day. Another 10 or 15 runs in the last overs could have helped us. You got to give credit to Kevin (O`Brien) and (Alex) Cusack the way they chased the total down. They got a pretty experienced side. They have done it before in World Cups. They get on to their attitude that they have nothing to lose.”

"On the two matches that we have played not one bowler but all bowlers suffered in the wickets. But, you got to get more runs quickly than your opposition teams," said the England captain.

Ireland captain William Porterfield, on his part, said today`s win was "biggest in our country`s cricket".

"We have won against Pakistan and Bangladesh in 2007 and lost to England by 48 runs. Going by these, this is the best ever win for us so far on international cricket," he said.

"Kevin`s was an unbelievable knock. I admire him for the manner in which he scored runs. Bangladesh loss is gone, we now have to do our best in the remaining matches. We had our strategy and plans and things fell in places," he added.

Kevin O`Brien, who entered his name into record books by hitting the fastest World Cup hundred in just 50 balls, said any sporting success over England was big in his country.

"It is a fantastic day for us not to say only for our cricket. Any time Ireland beat England whether it is football or rugby it is massive. We are enjoying every moment. We are now going to consolidate this win to our advantage in the remaining matches in the World Cup," he said.

"England were the favourites to win this match. You cannot just write us off in one-day cricket. Strange things can happen any day. It happens on some occasions we took our chances. As Porterfield had said that we took the powerplay in 31 overs. At that stage we took a chance and came off working our favour," he added.

  • Adobe has buried the hatchet with Apple over Flash and is touting its support of the iPad in a series of new ads.
The branding campaign, Adobe’s first, launches March 3 with the goal of educating consumers about the company’s array of products. An initial ad (pictured) features Martha Stewart Living‘s iPad design, which was created using Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite.
The inclusion of the iPad comes after Adobe and Apple’s fight last year over Flash. The brouhaha started after Apple CEO Steve Jobs said Flash was no longer necessary for mobile devices and banned it from the iPhone and iPad. In response, Adobe released a campaign themed “We ♥ Apple” that stated, although that may be the case, “What we don’t love is anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create and what you experience on the web.”
About a year later, though, John Travis, Adobe’s vice president of branding, says “we’ve kind of moved beyond that now.” In fact, Travis says the whole Apple spat was a wake-up call for the company because it showed that most people didn’t know Adobe’s full breadth of products. Hence, the campaign, which will also feature other Adobe users such as MTV, T-Mobile and American Eagle.
Despite Apple’s lack of support for Flash, Travis says that it is used on more than 20 million mobile devices. One such device that launched notably lacking Flash support, however, was Motorola’s Xoom, although Motorola says it plans to add Flash this spring.

Stealth Startup Turns Al Gore’s Book Into Interactive iPad App

Stealth startup Push Pop Press gave the TED audience a sneak peek at its app Tuesday, with co-founder and former Apple designer Mike Matas showing off an interactive iOS version of Al Gore’s book Our Choice.
The app essentially adds a rich, interactive layer to the book — which was first published in print in 2009 — in an interface that is both elegant and adds value to the reading experience.
For example, there’s about an hour and a half of video content, 20 interactive infographics, and all photos can be plotted on a map so the reader knows precisely where it was taken.
One infographic that illustrates environmental issues particularly well — and demonstrates the possibilities of the interactive medium — lets you adjust an individual country’s deforestation and see the impact in equivalence to cars off the road. Another lets you click on any state in the U.S. and see its potential for wind energy output.
Gore also steps in to narrate parts of the book and add color to the text.
The interface goes far beyond what one would find with Kindle or iBooks. The entire screen is occupied by content, and multimedia items can literally be lifted off the page using finger gestures. You can also pinch and zoom on just about any piece of content, and you can move through the book’s various chapters using your finger to scroll. All of it also plays nicely on the iPhone, though the company has no immediate plans to expand beyond iOS.
Our Choice is the first in what the company hopes will be many titles to leverage Push Pop’s technology. Matas, who joined Apple at age 19, told me after his presentation, “Most of what you see here is done in a reusable way so we could build another book like [this] very very easily.” He can see the company’s wares being used for content beyond books (magazines would make a lot of sense), though it would perhaps be overkill for certain works, like novels.
That said, Matas wasn’t ready to talk about the company’s business model and whether he plans to license the technology or collect a revenue share from publishers that use it (or both). He’s also not yet sure what Our Choice will price at, though we’ll find out when it hits the App Store at the end of March.

N'lands face cultural cousins SA on Mar 3

    Starting time: 2:30 pm IST
    Venue: Mohali

Mohali, March 2: With their close encounter against England last Tuesday, the Netherlands have sounded a strong message to the rest of their group, that they are certainly no push-overs. South Africa will to well to heed their call, especially as the side, judging from the last World Cup where they lost to Bangladesh, is possibly prone to going down to minnows.
    Peter Borren & Graeme Smith
However, South Africa can take resounding solace from the fact that they have given the Dutch an utter hiding in their only two previous encounters. Indeed, in the 1996 World Cup, South Africa consigned the Netherlands to an thumping 160. But the last time these two sides met, which was in the 2007 WC, the victory margin was even more emphatic - 221 runs.

The Proteas appear to have gone through an upheaval in terms of team composition since then as only three players remain in the side - all batsman, incidentally - captain Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and A B de Villiers. Meanwhile, the Dutch team hasn't remained constant either, imbibing four new players in the ranks.

But it turns out that two of the three veteran Proteas players excelled in their first WC 2011 match, which took place against the West Indies. A B de Villier grabbed most of the honours with his match-winning unbeaten 107 off 105 balls, while Smith pitched in with 45 and J P Duminy with 42 not out. So, they will certainly prove to be key players in not just the encounter against the Netherlands, but in the rest of the tournament as well.

The Dutch will be writhing, wincing and cringing from their last defeat to South Africa. After all, the Proteas compiled a gigantic total of 353/3 in 40 overs, before restricting their lowly opponents to just 132/9 in the same duration. The match is equally famous as it is notorious for the most-runs-scored-in-an-over record which went to Herchelle Gibbs, who flayed Daan Van Bunge for 6 consecutive sixes! In their reply, the Dutch's only saving grace was Ryan Ten Doeschate who made 57 of 74 balls.

Incidentally, Ten Doeschate is also one of the privileged few to notch up a century in this tournament, making a robust 119 off 110 balls against England. He also took 2 wickets in the match to unanimously be voted the Man of the Match for his efforts. So hopefully, he can repeat his stellar performance against the South Africans. Or will the law of averages do him a nasty trick here, like it did in the Netherlands match against the West Indies on Monday? Thursday, March 3rd holds the answer to that question.

Trott, Bell guide Eng to 327/8 vs Ire

Bangalore, March 2: If Ireland were entertaining hopes of limiting England to not too high a score, their optimism was smothered by a fierce Jonathan Trott who scored 92 and a steady Ian Bell who notched up 81, as their side surged to 327/8.

Iab Bell scored 81 for Eng vs Ire
Only the Irish spinners came anywhere close to posing a threat to the English top-order with George Dockrell and Paul Stirling taking a couple of early wickets between them. However, Ireland grabbed a flurry of wickets at the death, John Mooney picking up 4 and Trent Johnston a couple. Opener Kevin Peitersen set the tone of the innings by going after a platinum-blond Boyd Rankin early on. He got the tall seamer away for three fours in the bowler's first two overs, before Andrew Staruss launched him for a six in his third. England had climbed to 34/0 in 5 overs.

Just after England crossed 50 in the 9th over, Strauss knocked two boundaries of first-change bowler Alex Cusack. The fours kept coming at a brisk rate, one almost every over before George Dockrell bowled Strauss for 34 off 37 balls. England were 91/1 in 13.3 overs.

But that didn't temper the run flow. In the next over itself, Jonathan Trott hit John Mooney for two fours and Pietersen struck him for a six as England crossed 100. However, just a couple of overs later, Pietersen attempted a half-hearted reverse sweep off Paul Stirling to be caught by keeper Niall O'Brien, for 59 off 50 balls. England were 111/2 in 17 overs.

After those few hic-cups, it was smooth sailing for England as Trott and Ian Bell settled into a comfortable partnership. Though the fours came less frequently, England went past 150 in the 26th over and over 200 in the 34th. In the meantime, Trott had notched up his half-century.

In the 40th over, Trott struck Cusack for a four to bring up England's 250 and celebrated with another boundary. 16 runs had come off the over as Cusack had also bowled 5 wides. Then just as England were approaching 300, Mooney had Bell caught brilliantly at midwicket for 81 and then two overs later, bowled Trott for 92.

On 299/4, Trent Johnston castled Matt Prior for 6. Then 13 runs later, Paul Collingwood holed out to Kevin O'Brien at mid-on off Mooney for 16. Michael Yardy was the next to go, bowled to Johnston for 3 as England had slipped to 317/7. Mooney got his fourth wicket when he dismissed Tim Bresnan for 4 off the last ball. But England had nevertheless posted a huge total of 327/8 in their 50 overs.

Photo of iPhone 5 screen shows larger diagonal, super thin bezel

Apple has been very consistent with the iPhone screen size - 3.5 inches and that's it. Of course, four iterations of equally-sized display didn't discourage the bigger iPhone or iPhone nano rumors. The latest in the series is a photo of an alleged iPhone 5 screen digitizer, which shows a much thinner bezel around the screen.
Now, a thinner bezel is great - it lets you do things like keep the screen size but shrink the phone or keep the phone size and upsize the screen. Or you change both measurements, of course.
    iPhone 5 digitizer
Photo of iPhone 5 screen digitizer
Assuming the width of the phone hasn't changed (judging by Steve Jobs' past statements this seems the more likely option) we can try to guesstimate the display size. After some measurements and some math we ended up with just under 3.9" for the iPhone 5 screen diagonal, with should allow a margin of error because of the angle at which the photo of the digitizer was taken.
This seems pretty close to the rumor of a 4-inch screen for the fifth-gen iPhone. Or if we follow the iPhone mini rumor, then a 3.5" screen can fit into a pretty small phone. There are mockups of both versions floating around the net - you shouldn't put too much stock into them, but they should give you a general idea of what to expect.
    iPhone 5 digitizer
Mockups for the iPhone 5 with the new, thinner screen bezel

All this guesswork could have been avoided if the person who took the photo had a ruler on them. Anyway, what would you prefer - same size iPhone with bigger screen, or same size screen with smaller iPhone?
Either way, the iPhone 5 should be official this June (Apple keeps to their product schedule). Aside from the screen, the 5 is rumored to have a dual-core Apple A5 CPU, better graphics and NFC.

Here's the Samsung Galaxy S on Gingerbread, benchmarked

Our hands were itching to try the leaked Gingerbread update for the Samsung Galaxy S and to give it a spin to see what's what. The update doesn't bring anything spectacular in terms of looks; only the notification bar has changed icons and looks, but the rest of its is basically the same old TouchWiz 3.0.

The new version of the Samsung custom launcher that will launch on the Galaxy S II is sadly unavailable here. At least you get the download center that Gingerbread brings. Plus the leaked ROM feels surprisingly bugless for a beta release.
We also ran a few benchmarks to see if it's noticeably faster than its Froyo-running twin brother. Here are the results:

Compared to a Froyo-powered Galaxy S, these results are obviously better, which is pretty good considering that this is not a final version of Gingerbread.

Nvidia Tegra Zone is now active, LG Optimus 2X coming this month

NVIDIA announced today that their Tegra Zone application for Android is now official. It nicely coincides with LG announcing that the dual-core Optimus 2X will launch this month. Tegra Zone is an Android app that will offer Tegra 2 users suggestions about games, optimized especially for their dual-core chipset.

The Tegra Zone app looks really nice. It offers high resolution screenshots and professional reviews of the games. Even HD video trailers and gameplay videos are included.
Among the titles available at launch are Fruit Ninja THD, Monster Madness, Dungeon Defenders, Backbreaker THD and the first games on Android, built on the Unreal Engine 3 - Samurai II: Vengeance and Galaxy on Fire 2 THD. Here are some screenshots for you guys to enjoy.

Sadly, though, all the games featured so far are paid - there's no bonus content for Tegra 2 users.
In case you've missed our previous article on the Tegra Zone, you can check it out here.
If you still haven't been hooked up with a Tegra 2 phone or a tablet, you'd be happy to know that LG is launching its Optimus 2X smartphone this month. The phone will launch with Froyo but will be updated to Gingerbread afterwards. There's no info on specific launch dates or pricing.
Current pre-order prices will set you back either 500 euro (Amazon.de) or 500 pounds (Expansys UK).

Nokia N950 Based On MeeGo OS To Arrive This Year

Even as Nokia’s N9 is on its way (probably), Nokia has revealed details about its upcoming model N950. The Nokia N950 model will come on MeeGo OS this year.

Nokia’s CTO, Rich Green, was quoted as saying at a developer’s conference that Nokia N950, which is also the successor of N900 model, would have interesting user interface design and elegant hardware.

“It's your option as to how you want to treat that device. But as a developer platform, the ability on a Qt/QML/Linux platform to do some very interesting things will be there -- and um, we'll see how that goes,” Green was quoted as saying.

No other details of Nokia N950 models were disclosed by the company. Before this, there were strong rumors of MeeGo coming on Nokia’s N9 model. We hope Nokia’s N950 will not disappoint us like its N9 model.

    Mozilla Firefox 3.6.14

The award-winning Firefox Web browser has security, speed and new features that will change the way you use the Web. Don't settle for anything less. Mozilla Firefox project (formerly Firebird, which was formerly Phoenix) is a redesign of Mozilla's browser component, written using the XUL user interface language and designed to be cross-platform. It is small, fast and easy to use, and offers many advantages over other web browsers, such as the tabbed browsing and the ability to block pop-up windows. Firefox has the most ways to customize your online experience specifically for the way you use the web. There are more than 6,000 Add-ons (little extras that augment Firefox to meet your unique needs) just waiting out there to help you do more, have more fun and be more creative online. Firefox keeps your personal info personal and your online interests away from the bad guys. Simply put, your security is our top priority.

Firefox 3.6 (code-named Namoroka) is based upon Gecko 1.9.2. Please collect information about changes that will impact developers here, and our happy, helpful documentation gnomes will make sure that articles are written to explain your hard coding work.

Namoroka will employ a highly iterative, milestone based development process which will rely on feedback from developers, testers and users to ensure that we are properly investing time and resources. An initial exploration phase will be used to investigate development cost and benefit, as well as to create user interaction prototypes. This will be followed by an alpha development phase for early user testing and feedback, and then a beta phase for broader compatibility testing.
