Microsoft to dump Internet Explorer 6

Microsoft has elevated its efforts to urge people to shun the use of Internet Explorer 6-a decade after the browser was launched. The use of this browser is already on decline and now with Microsoft initiatives, IE6 will soon get dumped, sources reported.

According to the sources, the involvement of Microsoft has prompted many users to switch on to newer, better supported browsers. In fact, the software giant has introduced a unique way to prohibit its use. It has dedicated a website, ie6countdown.com. to gauge the drop in the usage of Internet Explorer 6. Moreover, the site is also pushing the visitors to encourage their friends and acquaintances to shift from IE6.

It has been cited that IE6 was witnessing some problems since last year which resulted in a sharp fall.  In some Asiatic countries it was prone to the piracy attacks.

So, the time has come to upgrade your browser and say goodbye to IE6.

WD Acquires Hitachi Global Storage

Western Digital (WD) and Hitachi have entered into an agreement whereby WD will acquire Hitachi Global Storage (Hitachi GST), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi, in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately Rs 21,500 crore.

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/!js/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]&mpvc="> </script> <noscript> <a href="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/nc/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]"> <img src="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/nb/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]" alt="Click Here" border="0"> </a> </noscript>
The proposed combination will result in a customer-focused storage company, with operating scale, global talent and the industry’s broad product lineup.

Under the terms of the agreement, WD will acquire Hitachi GST for Rs 17,500 crore in cash and 25 million WD common shares valued at Rs 375 crore, based on a WD closing stock price of Rs 1,500 as of March 4, 2011. Hitachi, will own approximately 10 percent of WD shares outstanding after issuance of the shares and two representatives of Hitachi will be added to the WD board of directors at closing.

The transaction has been approved by the board of directors of each company and is expected to close during the third calendar quarter of 2011, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. WD plans to fund the transaction with a combination of existing cash and total debt of approximately Rs 1250 crore.

The resulting company will retain the WD name and remain headquartered in Irvine, California. John Coyne will remain CEO of WD, Tim Leyden, CEO and Wolfgang Nickl, CFO. Steve Milligan, President and CEO of Hitachi GST, will join WD at closing as President, reporting to Coyne.

“The acquisition of Hitachi GST is a unique opportunity for WD to create further value for our customers, stockholders, employees, suppliers and the communities in which we operate,” said Coyne. “We believe this step will result in several key benefits enhanced R&D capabilities, innovation and expansion of product portfolio, market coverage and scale that will enhance our cost structure and ability to compete in a dynamic marketplace."

"As the former CEO of Hitachi GST, I always believed in the potential of Hitachi GST to become a larger and more agile company. This is a strategic combination of two industry leaders, both growing and profitable. It provides an opportunity for the new company to increase customer and shareholder value and expand into new markets. Additionally, it is important to us that WD shares common values with Hitachi GST to create a more global company that is well positioned to define a broader role in the evolving storage industry," Hiroaki Nakanishi, President, Hitachi said.

Juniper Networks Introduces Industry’s First Converged Packet Transport Switch

Juniper Networks has unveiled the industry’s first Converged Supercore switch which can scale upto 3800 terabits. By merging the core packet and optical network layers, the switch supports unpredictable traffic patterns driven by the rapid growth of mobile, video and cloud computing applications.

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/!js/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]&mpvc="> </script> <noscript> <a href="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/nc/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]"> <img src="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/nb/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]" alt="Click Here" border="0"> </a> </noscript>
Powered by the Junos Express chipset and the Junos operating system, the Juniper Networks PTX Series Packet Transport Switch consolidates optical transport to provide the engine of the new Converged Supercore, resulting in cost savings of up to 65 percent over legacy architectures.

“Today’s culture has created an “any service, anytime, anywhere” connection model driven by the proliferation of mobile, video, cloud computing and other data-intensive services that is producing a steady increase in network traffic of over 40 percent a year, with traffic increasingly characterized by unpredictable volume and patterns. Juniper’s Converged Supercore solution is designed to enhance service provider economics while delivering on the subscriber expectations of the new always-connected life, said Stefan Dyckerhoff, Executive VP and GM, Platform Systems Group at Juniper.

“As the vast majority of network traffic is packet-based, service providers need to rethink the architecture of the core transport network to scale with the demands of the IP world,” he said.

The PTX Series achieves:
  • 4x the speed at 480 Gigabits per second (Gbps) per slot, expandable to 2 Terabits per second (Tbps) per slot
  • 5x the packet processing capability per slot
  • 1/3 the total power consumption at 1W/Gbps
  • 10x the system scale, supporting up to 3800 Tbps
The PTX Series includes the 8 Tbps PTX5000 and the 16 Tbps PTX9000, each supporting an initial 480 Gbps per slot throughput, and a suite of 10/40/100GE short-reach and ultra long-haul DWDM interfaces. The PTX Series will be available for beta trials in the third quarter of 2011.

Digisol Launches Gigabit Ethernet Web-Managed Switch

Aimed at the SMB segment, Digisol has introduced Gigabit Ethernet switch DG-GS1526, featuring 24 gigabit Ethernet ports with 2 Gigabit SFP slots. Its Web-based management interface simplifies the configuration of port settings, security, QoS, link aggregation and VLANs.

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/!js/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]&mpvc="> </script> <noscript> <a href="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/nc/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]"> <img src="http://altfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/nb/11699-123604-30488-1?mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]" alt="Click Here" border="0"> </a> </noscript>
The DG-GS1526 comes with 52 Gbps switching capacity and wire-speed switching performance designed for high-performance PCs and laptops. The SFP slots allow copper or fiber uplinks to servers or backbones.

8 egress queues per port enable differentiated management of up to eight traffic types which is prioritized according to 802.1p, DSCP, IP precedence and TCP/UDP port number, for real time applications such as voice and video. Asymmetric bidirectional rate-limiting, per port or per traffic class, preserves network bandwidth.

IEEE 802.1w Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol provides a loop free network and redundant links to the core network with rapid convergence, to ensure faster recovery from failed links, enhancing overall network stability and reliability. IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol runs STP per VLAN base, providing Layer 2 load sharing on redundant links up to eight instances. IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) increases bandwidth by automatically aggregating several physical links together as a logical trunk and providing load balancing and fault tolerance for uplink connections. IGMP snooping prevents flooding of IP multicast traffic and limits bandwidth intensive multicast traffic to only the subscribers. Switch supports Q-in-Q VLAN Tagging.

Apple patches critical Mac bugs with Java updates

Apple on Tuesday shipped a Java security update to Leopard and Snow Leopard users that patched a total of 27 vulnerabilities in the Oracle software.
Apple said that some of the bugs could be exploited to execute attack code outside the Java sandbox, which would make it possible for hackers hijack a vulnerable Mac. However, the company did not spell out how many of the vulnerabilities could be exploited to "execute arbitrary code," its way of saying that the flaws should be considered critical.
Mac OS X 10.5, a.k.a. Leopard, received an update that patched 16 vulnerabilities in Java SE 6 and another 11 in Java SE 5. The update for the newer Mac OS X 10.6, a.k.a. Snow Leopard, also patched the 16 bugs in Java SE 6.
The Java SE 6 update fixed the same flaws that Oracle patched with the 1.6.0_24 security update issued on Feb. 15, 2011.
Tuesday's Java update was the first for Apple since mid-October 2010.
Shortly before that, Apple "deprecated" the Java runtime on Mac OS X -- telling developers not to rely on it being present in the operating system -- and announced that it would contribute the tools and technologies it had created to build Java SE 7 to Oracle's OpenJDK open-source project.
In other words, Apple was indicating that it planned to stop its own development of Java for Mac and would drop it from future versions of the operating system.
The company did commit to continuing to support Java in Leopard and Snow Leopard, however.
"The Java runtime shipping in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will continue to be supported and maintained through the standard support cycles of those products," Apple said on its developer Web site last October.
Last year's announcement hinted that Apple would not bundle a Java runtime with Mac OS X 10.7, a.k.a. Lion, the operating system upgrade slated to ship this summer. Reports, including one by AppleInsider last month, confirmed that Java is AWOL from Lion.
Experts are split on the question of whether the disappearance of Java from Mac OS X will improve the operating system's security.
The Java updates, which range between 75MB and 120MB in size, can be downloaded at the Apple site or installed using the operating system's integrated update service.

Windows Phone 7 update may be delayed

An official Windows Phone blog in French says that the first substantial update for Windows Phone devices may not come until the end of the month, a week or two later than expected.
In February, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said to expect the update, which will include cut-and-paste functionality and performance enhancements, in early March.
But the Wednesday blog post on the French site, spotted by the Mobiletechworld blog, said users should expect to be notified of the update in the second half of March.
Microsoft did not reply to a request for comment about the potential delay.
All About Microsoft's Mary Jo Foley cites unnamed sources who say the update is now scheduled for March 21.
The delay could be due to persistent problems Microsoft is having with its very first update, which was designed to improve the update process. It had to suspend sending out the update to Samsung phone users because it made some phones unusable. Once it resumed sending out the update, a new problem arose that prevented some Samsung customers from installing the update. It has since devised a workaround for that problem.
Microsoft is now being criticized for taking so long to deliver the update, especially since the only new functionality it will include is cut and paste, a feature many people expected in the initial release of the product. The company started selling the phones in North America in November.
Ballmer said to expect additional updates later in the year including the ability to multitask, a new HTML5 browser and access to SkyDrive, Microsoft's online document-sharing service.

Safari, IE hacked first at Pwn2Own Apple, Microsoft browsers drop to first shots at the hacking contest

Apple's Safari and Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) both fell to the first hackers who tried their luck on the browsers at Wednesday's opening day of Pwn2Own.
The hacking challenge kicked off at 3:30 p.m. PT, slightly later than scheduled, at the CanSecWest security conference, which runs March 9-11 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
A team from the French security company Vupen walked off with $15,000 and a new MacBook Air after exploiting an unpatched vulnerability in Safari.
Earlier today, Apple updated Safari to version 5.0.4, fixing 62 vulnerabilities. But Vupen was still able to break the browser.

"Apple has just released Safari 5.0.4 and iOS 4.3 a few minutes before the Pwn2Own contest," Vupen said Wednesday afternoon on its Twitter account several hours before the contest began. "This breaks some exploits but not all!!"
HP TippingPoint, the security company that sponsors Pwn2Own, said earlier today that the last-minute Safari updates could affect who was awarded prize money.
TippingPoint's Peter Vreugdenhil said the browsers were "frozen" two weeks before today's tip-off with the then-current versions of Safari, Google's Chrome 9, Microsoft's IE8 and Mozilla's Firefox 3.6, to give researchers a stationary target.
"Exploit development does sometimes rely on certain versions and that is the reason we have frozen the devices," Vreugdenhil said in an e-mail today.
But the Safari patches still had a part to play in Vupen winning. If the vulnerability used by Vupen to hack Safari had been fixed in 5.0.4, TippingPoint would not have awarded the $15,000 prize.
Instead, the money would have gone to the first researcher who exploited the "frozen" version of Safari -- 5.0.3 was on the MacBook Air -- using a bug still present in today's update.
"As long as the latest version still has the vulnerability, and the researcher has successfully 'pwned' [successfully compromised the computer] with the frozen version, he or she will have won," said Vreugdenhil.
This was the first time in four years that Safari had fallen to someone other than Charlie Miller, an analyst with the security consulting group Independent Security Evaluators (ISE), and co-author of The Mac Hackers Handbook. Miller won at Pwn2Own in 2008, 2009 and 2010 by exploiting Safari.
Microsoft's IE8 also dropped to its first attacker, Stephen Fewer, who drew the No. 1 spot for that browser. Fewer is the founder of Harmony Security, and frequently reports bugs to TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) bounty program.
To exploit IE8, Fewer bypassed Protected Mode, said Aaron Portnoy, manager of TippingPoint's security research team and the organizer of Pwn2Own for each of its five years. Protected Mode is Microsoft's name for the sandbox-like anti-exploit technology designed to isolate the browser from the operating system and the rest of the computer.

New Verizon flyer says HTC Thunderbolt is "now available"

New Verizon flyer says HTC Thunderbolt is
Depicted on a new Verizon sales flyer is an image of the highly-anticipated LTE-capable HTC Thunderbolt with the phrase “now available” despite the fact that it hasn’t even been given a release date.

Odds are this flyer was printed before the latest delay hit what is supposed to be the first smartphone to run on Verizon’s speedy 4G LTE network. The HTC Thunderbolt still doesn’t have a release date set in stone, but one would hope it’ll come out this month at some point.

So it appears that Verizon doesn’t even know when this phone will truly hit the shelves. There have been several dates surface but every single one has turned out to be incorrect due to the delays. The reason for these delays is rumored to involve terrible battery life amongst other things. Any predictions on when this device will actually come out? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

LG Revolution receives its FCC listing

LG Revolution receives its FCC listing
One of Verizon’s upcoming 4G LTE capable devices, The Android-powered LG Revolution, has received its FCC listing and appears set to launch on the nation’s leading carrier sometime in the very near future.

If you aren’t yet familiar with this upcoming smartphone, the LG Revolution fills up the specification sheet quite well. It has a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display and is powered by a next-gen 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Like many of the other high-end phones to hit shelves recently, the Revolution will have two cameras. Around back is a 5 megapixel camera with HD video recording while the front has a 1.3 megapixel camera for all of your self-portrait and video-chatting needs.

Given the several delays to hit the HTC Thunderbolt and the fact that the LG Revolution appears set for a launch this month, it is possible that the Revolution could actually be Verizon’s first LTE-capable handset. Tell us what you think in the comments below.

Verizon's Samsung Stealth (or Droid Charge) caught in the wild

Verizon's Samsung Stealth (or Droid Charge) caught in the wild
We first heard about the Samsung SCH-i520 last December, but then we got a very nice hands-on look at it during CES 2011. At that time, they were only calling it the "Samsung 4G LTE smartphone for Verizon", but we knew that it would eventually get a really cool name. Now we know it's going to be called the Samsung Stealth (or Stealth V) and some lucky person has been using one, so of course they took a few new pictures.

The tipster says that the Stealth is expected to hit stores by mid-April, which is not far off, since the HTC Thunderbolt keeps being pushed-back to only God knows when, and the Motorola DROID BIONIC is slated for sometime late Q2 (May-June). Furthermore, the Stealth is said to offer pretty good battery life, lasting a 8-10 hours of 4G LTE usage with the included 1500mAh battery, and as of now their data speeds aren't being throttled, but that may change once the 4G smartphones go on sale.

Other than the Samsung Stealth coming with 4G LTE, it features an impressive 4.3" Super AMOLED Plus with 480x800 WVGA resolution, a newer 1GHz Hummingbird processor (but still a single-core), an 8MP autofocus rear camera with 720p video recording and a 1.3MP front camera for video chat, HDMI output, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth v3.0, 828MB of internal storage, and microSDHC memory card slot. It will come with Android 2.2 Froyo and with a new version of Samsung's TouchWiz interface, through the person who took these pictures says they installed LauncherPRO on the phone because they like how it looks better.

So which Verizon 4G smartphone do you want, the Samsung Stealth, HTC Thunderbolt, Motorola DROID BIONIC, or LG Revolution?

*UPDATE*
We recieved a tip today from a person who claims to have some more info about this device. They say the phone will actually be called the Droid Charge, as the name "Stealth" is already trademarked and owned by another company. The included battery will actually be a 1600mAh capacity, not 1500mAh, and the camera will be able to record videos up to 1080p. Naturally we here have no way to verify any of this, but we're not crazy about the name "Droid Charge" and think "Stealth" sounds better.

Microsoft France says "NoDo" upgrade for Windows Phone 7 will come second half of this month

Microsoft France says
We recently reported that the major "Mango" upgrade for Windows Phone 7 might be pushed back to 2012. Now, according to Microsoft's French blog, the much smaller "NoDo" upgrade can be expected to rollout in the second half of this month. This is the upgrade that will give users of Microsoft's OS the ability to use copy and paste on their handset.

According to the blog, the upgrade will be made available through the Zune software during the second half of this month. The original date for the upgrade was to be the first half of this month, so until you actually see it on your screen, remember that software deadlines seem to be a moving target when it comes to Microsoft's mobile OS.

Pre-orders go live for the Bell's Motorola ATRIX through Best Buy Canada

Pre-orders go live for the Bell's Motorola ATRIX through Best Buy Canada
Even though US consumers are getting their fill of the Motorola ATRIX 4G, especially with its innovative qualities, but our friends north of the border will soon have the prestigious opportunity of getting comfy with this highly prized device.

The Android 2.2 Froyo powered Motorola ATRIX for Bell will soon be upon us, but as of right now, you can fetch a pre-order of the handset through Best Buy Canada. The consumer electronics giant will pretty much guarantee you a unit on release day if you can shell out $50 for a pre-order – which is then placed on a gift card that you’ll be using when you return for the actual purchase.

Although it’s unpredictable to fathom the kind of demand it’ll garner, it’s still nevertheless a good idea to get a pre-order and ditch any potential waiting list.

Naturally, it’s nice to see Best Buy Canada rolling out its pre-order process for the Motorola ATRIX for Bell, but the only thing left to complete the puzzle is an actual launch date for the smartphone.

Software update is coming to the Motorola CHARM, but don't expect Froyo

Software update is coming to the Motorola CHARM, but don't expect Froyo
There’s no denying that some Motorola CHARM owners out there are bummed out by the fact that they’re simply going to be left behind and stuck with Android 2.1 Éclair, however, that doesn’t mean we won’t see any updates at all to this adorable Android smartphone.

In fact, Motorola is brewing up a software update that’s going to bring along some new features and improvements that should nonetheless appease most owners. So far, the software update appears to bring Wi-Fi calling, improve phone stability, include the SlackerRadio app, improved touchscreen response, better audio quality through its speakers, and some additional bug fixes and improvements. Despite being shunned from any newer Android versions, this might prove to be a decent parting gift for the Motorola CHARM.

Although no concrete time frame has been attached to the update’s release, it’s positioned to be released some time on or around March 11th – so be sure to keep an eye out for that notification to pop up.

HP takes a leap foward in quickly dropping the price of the Palm Pre 2 to free

HP takes a leap foward in quickly dropping the price of the Palm Pre 2 to free
As we all continue to wait for Big Red to make a move in potentially lowering the price of the Palm Pre 2, HP has gone ahead once again to lower its price point through their HP Wireless Central online store.

Previously, we’ve seen them already bring it down to as low as $30 with a contract, but it didn’t take them long to bring it to a new level that everyone would be content about it. Precisely, they’re now selling the Palm Pre 2 for the 2-year contract price of free – whereas Verizon hasn’t moved from its $149.99 on-contract pricing. So if you’ve been patient in holding off a purchase for the most up-to-date webOS smartphone on the market right now, then it’s about time you made a move and go buy this one.

Obviously, HP can’t go any less from what they’re offering right now – that’s unless they decide to give customers money back to purchase it. In any event, the ball is now in Verizon’s court because we’re sure consumers are waiting for them to follow accordingly.

Sony Ericsson Xperia arc will be available as early as March 21st in the UK?

Sony Ericsson Xperia arc will be available as early as March 21st in the UK?
Previously, we’ve reported that pre-orders for the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc are currently available in the UK and that Vodafone UK has it pegged down as “coming soon,” but its anticipated release might not be too far off from now.

From the sounds of it all, Mobile.co.uk will have stock of the highly anticipated Android powered device in time for the business week of March 21st – which is less than 2 weeks away from now. It’s going to be good news all around if it holds true since the handset was originally positioned to be released some time in April. As it stands right now, Mobile.co.uk has the device listed with service for O2, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Three UK – with the best 2-year contract deal at £29.99 ($49) for the handset itself on a £25 ($40) per month plan.

As we wait around for all the festivities that should arise from CTIA 2011, it’ll be pretty sweet if the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc can actually make it to market in time for the big event.

White Apple iPhone 4 production to start in March, shipping to begin in April?

White Apple iPhone 4 production to start in March, shipping to begin in April?
After months of trying to solve production problems with the white Apple iPhone 4, the GSM version of the phone will start to be manufactured with a white body and should be shipped and be available next month. This rosy view comes from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with Concord Securities, who said that the Cupertino based firm has started to use a new film material in the production of the white version of the phone. The new film eliminates the problems that had plagued the firm in getting a white iPhone 4 to the public. The timing should be no surprise as we earlier reported that the iPhone 4 variant would be available this spring.

Earlier attempts to produce a white Apple iPhone 4 resulted to too many units that were defective based on Apple's high manufacturing standards. As a result, the decision was made to pull the plug on the model until it could be produced with a higher percentage of acceptable units. Apple has partnered with a Japanese company that has developed a painting technique that gives the manufacturer more control over the thickness of the paint being sprayed on the phone and this apparently is the solution that will enable production of the white GSM model to begin this month with shipments starting in April. Earlier speculation centered on the delay coming from light leaking out of the device.

As proof that Apple has solved the problem producing its devices in white, last week CEO Steve Jobs said that a white version of the new Apple iPad 2 will be launched this Friday, the same day that the original black tablet will be available. Still, until Apple makes an announcement to confirm that the white iPhone 4 is on the way, there will continue to be those skeptics who will say that they have heard it all before. And of course,, there are those who feel that with an expected iPhone 5 coming this summer, putting money and effort into a white iPhone 4 would be a waste at this point in the game.

“HTC EVO View 4G” trademark spotted; might not be a tablet after all

“HTC EVO View 4G” trademark spotted; might not be a tablet after all
When we recently wrote about a possible device by the name of HTC EVO View making its debut at CTIA, we believed it would turn out to be the HTC Flyer tablet with a couple of bells and whistles added to it by Sprint. On the other hand, a couple of filings for the HTC EVO View 4G trademark have been submitted by the Taiwanese manufacturer not long ago and are making us think twice about what the handheld may exactly be.

After reading both submissions we found out that neither of them mentions the mysterious HTC EVO View 4G to be a tablet at all. Going through the filing for the HTC Flyer clearly defines the device to be a tablet while the EVO View 4G is classified as a portable computer for some reason. Still, this isn't enough of an evidence to entirely write out the possibility of seeing a tweaked HTC Flyer at CTIA after all. Hold on tight as we will know for sure in two weeks' time.

AT&T blamed for throttling uploads on its first 4G devices

AT&T blamed for throttling uploads on its first 4G devices
If you trust your common sense, it isn't hard figuring out that 4G is going to be faster than 3G, right?  Well, not always. Some AT&T customers have spotted something strange going on with their uploads, which doesn't seem to meet their data speed expectations.

A growing number of AT&T subscribers have started complaining about limited upload speeds on their otherwise 4G-capable handsets. Sounds a bit odd, but 3G smartphones currently running on AT&T's network seem to be achieving faster uploads compared to the carrier's 4G lineup. The speed limit is noticed to be imposed on AT&T's wireless USB modems as well. On the other hand, 3G cellphones boast uploads of 1 Mbps and above even though their 4G counterparts are theoretically superior. In other words, if you have just bought a new and shiny Motorola ATRIX 4G or the HTC Inspire 4G, your upload speed will probably be no more than a fifth of what the iPhone 4, for example, would get under the same network conditions. This coincides with the disappointing speed results that we mentioned in the reviews of both the Motorola ATRIX 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G.

It is good to know that upload speed is not always crucial to casual web browsing. However, it really makes a difference in video conversations where both upstream and downstream are just as important. Hackers have already been reported to be working on a solution to the problem, yet AT&T has made a slight hint towards a possible software update in the future.

Check out the video below, where a fellow YouTube member compares data speeds on the iPhone 4, the Motorola ATRIX 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G. The results are underwhelming, to say the least.

iPad 2 data service plans from AT&T and Verizon go head to head

iPad 2 data service plans from AT&T and Verizon go head to head
So, you have your mind set on getting a 3G-enabled Apple tablet with a cellular data plan. Regardless of which one of the two options you pick – a first generation iPad with 3G connectivity, which you can buy today, or waiting for the 3G-capable version of the iPad 2 to hit the shelves in a couple of days, it is either AT&T or Verizon where you will be getting your 3G data from. Before taking out your credit card it may be wise to become a bit more familiar with what the two carriers have to offer in terms of 3G data plans.

The entry level iPad with 3G connectivity and 16 gigs of storage is for sale on AT&T's website for a discounted price of $529 while supplies last. This isn't a bad deal considering that Verizon has yet to slash the prices of the iPads it offers. As of today, a Wi-Fi-only iPad bundled together with a Mi-Fi hotspot device is listed for $629 on Verizon's website.

Verizon's data plans for the iPad start from $20, all of them are contract-free, and can be started or stopped whenever subscribers would like. The most basic data subscription buys you a gig of traffic and charges an additional $20 for each gig extra, but requires a rather steep $35 activation fee – almost twice as much as the data fee itself. The same activation fee applies to users, which have chosen to stop their data plan and renew it after a period of three months or more. Other Verizon 3G data plans include three, five, and ten gigs of traffic and cost $35, $50, and $80 respectively.

Similarly to Verizon's offers, choosing a data plan from AT&T does not require you to sign a contract, which eliminates the hassle of long-term commitment. Once activated, subscriptions get renewed automatically on a monthly basis, but subscribers can cancel their data plan at any time without the need to pay any additional fees whatsoever. $15 will provide you 250 MB of data and going beyond that milestone will cost an additional $15 for every 250 MB of extra traffic used. A 2 GB data plan is also available for the price of $25 per month with each additional gigabyte of data costing $10 extra.

Now that you know what both carriers are providing you for your money, which one of the plans seems most convenient for you? Feel free to drop a comment below and let us know.

Samsung sends an open invitation to Symbian developers to join bada

Samsung sends an open invitation to Symbian developers to join bada
Symbian is officially a "burning platform", and it seems like Samsung is in a humanitarian mood as it's reported that the Korean manufacturer is more than happy to offer shelter (in the form of its own OS - bada) to the Symbian refugees.

It's said that Samsung has sent an open invitation to a number of Indian developers who are working on Symbian, but are disillusioned with Nokia's decision to make WP its main smartphone strategy. The letter encourages them to start developing for bada. The exact words are:

"If you are a Symbian developer unhappy about Nokia’s recent announcements, and are hence looking for a new platform to showcase your talents, we say “Hello!” and “Welcome to bada!” If you’re new to the bada development, or are moving your app from Symbian, we’d like to welcome you with the ‘Quick guide to bada development’. In about 15 minutes, you can learn how to build your first bada app!"

We guess this is a win-win situation for both Samsung's OS and these developers. It would be great for bada if there is an influx of developers who are seasoned veterans, and if this happens, we hope we would see the fruits of their labor pretty soonish.

Microblogs in Communist Party's fight to win public approval

China's wary government is a world champion in internet censorship, but Communist Party leaders now want to master the trickier feat of actively shaping online opinion.
The results so far don't match the zap and crackle of China's young, who have embraced microblogs as their latest tool for spreading information and opinions that can make Party officials see red. But there's no mistaking the Party's determination to reach China's 450 million Internet users.
President Hu Jintao recently called the "virtual world" his next battleground, and the nation's Party-run parliament, now in session, has brought talk about how to win over or control the country's microbloggers.
Hu recently called for fresh ways to "guide online public opinion", amid online calls for Chinese people to emulate the "Jasmine Revolution" sweeping the Middle East.
"This is all part of the longer trend in more interactive governance," said David Bandurski, a researcher at the China Media Project at the University of Hong Kong.
"To what degree this is genuine and impacts citizens positively, that's an open debate."
For now, Chinese officials' efforts to connect online appear to be more patronising and fusty than feisty.
"Recently, a woman from a minority ethnic group wrote to me, saying 'over the past year, we local residents have gradually felt the warmth of unity and love'," wrote the party chief of Xinjiang, Zhang Chunxian, on his first microblog message on QQ, a Chinese social networking website, last Wednesday.
Zhang -- the highest known Party official to join microblogging according to Xinhua news agency -- became party chief of China's far-western region of Xinjiang last April, about nine months after bloody ethnic riots in the province prompted authorities to shut down cellphone and Internet services.
Zhang, who has gained more than 148,000 followers on his microblog, said it can "be used to promote the government's efforts in Xinjiang's development", he told the state-owned China Daily.
It is not easy to gauge how effective the government's online propaganda strategy is because dissenting comments are usually quickly censored. However, one user, called Yangyang, shot back at the effusive Xinjiang party chief: "I don't think everything is as rosy".
Many of the nearly 3,000 legislative delegates meeting in the cavernous Great Hall of the People have posted messages on their microblogs praising Wen's annual State of the Union-style report.
"The prime minister reported that under the 11th Five-Year Plan, the country has undergone historic changes, people's living standards have improved significantly, the country's international status and influence have also improved," wrote ANTA Sports Products chairman Ding Shizhong, a delegate.
"For the next five years, people will definitely live happier and more dignified lives!"
MORE SUPPLE PROPAGANDA
The Chinese government allows censored Twitter-like microblogging services -- known as Weibo -- on domestic websites run by companies such as Sina, Sohu and Tencent.
More than 3,000 government organisations in China use Sina's microblogs, according to Sina spokesman Liu Qi. Experts say these numbers are expected to rise.
"The government, in many places, has not won the confidence of the public," said Hu Yong, a professor of Internet studies at Peking University. "In many instances, their image has a problem. So perhaps by using the Internet, the government believes it can change these things."
The move into microblogs suggests that the government sees the need for a more supple form of propaganda in the age of social media, said Bandurski.
"The microblogs are a way to reach out and on one hand appear to be open and flexible and add a degree of openness and credibility," he said.
Most Chinese critics of the government use virtual private networks to circumvent the Great Firewall to access Facebook and Twitter, both of which are blocked in China, which fears that they could allow the government's critics to organise.
A government that censors so readily could have a hard time selling its message.
"I think their noise is already too much," said Mao Yushi, one of China's most prominent economists and a critic of one-party control.
"Even without Weibo, the radio stations and People's Daily are still talking every day," said Mao, 82, who started using a microblog three months ago.

Nokia CFO sees long Symbian sales ahead

Nokia Oyj reinforced its commitment to its legacy Symbian smartphone platform on Wednesday, sending its shares higher.
Nokia said in February it would replace its Symbian platform with Microsoft's Windows Phone over the coming two years, creating uncertainty among investors over the future of its Symbian workhorse.
"We will of course utilise the long-tail of Symbian as long as it gives us profitable margin," Nokia's Chief Financial Officer Timo Ihamuotila told a UBS Technology Conference.
"So the transition period 2011-2012 relates to product creation transition, not sales transition as such," he said.
Ihamuotila said sales of products have often lasted longer than expected in the mobile industry.
Shares in Nokia rose more than 3 percent on Ihamuotila comments, dragging STOXX 600 European Technology Index 0.1 percent into the black.
"Symbian faces similar challenges to Mark Twain whose death was famously announced prematurely," said Ben Wood, head of research at British consultancy CCS Insight.
"Nokia must come out with a strong message that its legacy smartphone platform is alive and well as sales of Symbian devices are going to be critical for the next 18 months," Wood said.
Ihamuotila said the final contract with Microsoft was yet to be signed.

Mar 31 deadline for BlackBerry security plan

New Delhi: The government has fixed March 31 as deadline for all telecom operators to submit plans for interception of their services, including popular BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) of Research in Motion (RIM), by security agencies.
The Home Ministry has asked the Department of Telecom (DoT) to ensure that all telecom operators submit their plans by the end of this month on when they can provide access to all services, including BES, whenever there is a necessity for the security agencies.
RIM, which offers the BlackBerry services through eight operators, has been saying that it cannot provide access to the popular BES as it does not possess any key and the security architecture is the same around the world.
Mar 31 deadline for BlackBerry security plan
"If they cannot give access, they have to put off their services in India," an official said.
The order will cover all service providers, including RIM, Skype and others. There are over one million BlackBerry subscribers in India and the number is growing fast.
By March 31, the Centre will also put in place a security architecture for the telecom sector through which the government could put in a new facility to deposit open software and new testing facility in certain forms.
Indian security agencies have been demanding access to all BlackBerry services as part of efforts to fight militancy and security threats over the Internet and through telephone communications.
Last month, Home Secretary Gopal K Pillai had said that telecom operators will have to stop any such services that cannot be monitored as per the satisfaction of law enforcement agencies.
"Our aim is to make sure that whatever goes through our networks, we should be able, if required, intercept it... The issue is that we want that if you are using the network as per the licencing condition, there must be a provision for us to intercept... those which we want to intercept and that must be readable and legible format," Pillai had said.
Eight operators including Bharti, Vodafone, Idea, RCom, Tata and also two state owned firms - BSNL and MTNL - are offering BlackBerry services across the country and it has emerged a popular service among corporates for its enterprise mail service.
RIM vice-president (Industry, Government and University Relations) Robert E Crow, who was in India recently, had said, "There is no possibility of us providing any kind of a solution. There is no solution, there are no keys to be handed... It's not possible to do so because the keys of the service are in possession of the corporate enterprises."
However, the argument is not bought by the security establishment.

Indian scientist helps NASA predict solar flare

http://static.ibnlive.com/pix/sitepix/03_2011/solar_flares_pkg1_271x181.jpgKolkata: There was a huge solar flare in 1859. It was so large that it could be seen with the naked eye. In 1989, a solar storm wiped out Canada's northern electric grid. Canada was out of power for almost three days.Violent magnetic emissions from the sun could one day destroy all electronic equipment on earth. An Indian scientist from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research has helped NASA predict when such explosions are likely to happen.
"The activity of the sun affects satellites, air traffic on polar routes, telecommunications. So there is a huge industry in trying to develop forecasting capabilities," said Dibyendu Nandi of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.
For the past 10 years, the sun is worryingly quiet. And even that can severely disrupt earth's climate. Scientists couldn't predict the sun's violent and silent phases. But Doctor Dibyendu Nandi has found a way.
Super hot currents of plasma ripple on the sun's surface and inside it, driven by chemical reactions and magnetic fields. Dibyendu's theories and computer simulations warn when those forces build up unbearably, to trigger an explosion.
Dibyendu is now gearing up for Aditya, India's satellite to study the sun, which will be launched in 2014.
"Aditya will help study the sun," said Dibyendu.
NASA making headlines on exotic phenomena like solar flares isn't unusual, but an Indian scientist spearheading that breakthrough, certainly is. After the Chandrayaan moon mission, it's another happy example of Indian science rising to an entirely new level.

Lime Wire, music companies settle copyright case

New York: The operator of Lime Wire, a once-popular file-sharing service shut down last year for copyright infringement, has settled a lawsuit brought by music publishers.
The settlement with Lime Wire LLC covers more than 30 publishers, including units of EMI Group, Sony Corp and Vivendi SA. The terms were not disclosed.
These publishers also dismissed claims against New York-based Lime Wire's founder, Mark Gorton. The case was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be brought again.
Lime Wire, music companies settle copyright case
"A settlement was reached," a spokeswoman for the National Music Publishers Association said. "The parties worked hard to achieve a settlement that is a good result for all involved."
Joseph Baio, a partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, declined to comment on the settlement.
Music publishers sued Lime Wire last June, after US District Judge Kimba Wood found the New York-based company wrongfully assisted users in pirating digital recordings. Wood shut down the service in October.
Thirteen record companies are still pursuing copyright litigation against Lime Wire, seeking possible damages totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.
The companies include Arista, Atlantic, BMG Music, Capital, Elektra, Interscope, Laface, Motown, Priority, Sony BMG, UMG, Virgin and Warner Brothers, court records show.
A trial in that case is scheduled for May 2, Baio said.
Record companies own copyrights to recordings, while publishers can own copyrights to the songs themselves.

Warner Bros to offer movies through Facebook

San Francisco: Warner Bros is making some of its films available on Facebook, opening up a new revenue source for the Internet social network and signaling new competition for online entertainment companies.
Consumers can pay for the movies using Facebook Credits, a virtual currency so far used mainly in social games on the site, according to Warner Bros, a unit of Time Warner Inc, on Tuesday.
Facebook, which makes money mostly through online advertising, takes 30 per cent of the revenue from sales by third parties on the website using Credits.
Warner Bros to offer movies through Facebook
The service will initially be available in the United States, the company said.
The streaming of full-length Hollywood films on Facebook creates a new role for the 500-million-plus member social network, which has grown into one of the most powerful Web players by making it easy to share photos, videos and other content with friends.
In a note to investors on Tuesday, Goldman Sachs analyst Ingrid Chung said Facebook represents a long-term threat to online rental service Netflix Inc that caught Wall Street investors by surprise.
"The 'wisdom of friends' could be a bigger driver of movie viewership than the 'wisdom of crowds,'" wrote Chung.
Shares of Netflix closed 5.8 per cent lower at $195.45 on Nasdaq.
However, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett said in a note to investors that online pay-per-view services have not proved as popular as subscription-based movie services, and noted that the Warner Bros offering is a "far cry" from Facebook launching a subscription service.
Shares of Apple Inc, which offers pay-per-view movies online, rose 0.1 per cent to $355.76. Amazon.com Inc, which also rents movies online, fell 1.3 per cent to $166.89.
It was not immediately clear whether other movie studios were planning similar projects with Facebook.
The first movie available on the Warner Bros Entertainment page on Facebook is "The Dark Knight". Additional titles will be available for rental or purchase in the coming months.
Rentals cost 30 Facebook Credits, or $3, for 48 hours, and viewers can pause and restart a movie whenever they log back in.
One person close to the Warner-Facebook project told Reuters that it was not a partnership, but rather, a Facebook application that Warner developed on its own, using the website's open payment and technology standards.
More than 400 games and applications use Facebook Credits, the company said in an emailed statement on Tuesday. "We're open to developers and partners that want to experiment using credits in new and interesting ways, and we look forward to seeing what they come up with."

Met department looks for faster supercomputers

New Delhi: Predicting the weather means calculating a thousand different possibilities. India has supercomputers to do that. But now, it wants one that is four times faster.Minister of State of Science and Technology Ashwani Kumar said, "We want to ratchet up our computing capacity from 70 terraflops to 300 terraflops."That is ten thousand times faster than your desktop Personal Computers. One teraflop means a trillion instructions solved every second. In the eighties, the Meteorological Department struggled to get its first supercomputer from the US. The Americans believed it could be misused by the military.
"There used to be an argument that if India gets these supercomputers, we would be able to monitor ocean currents and even submarine movements of other countries. We had to fight that prejudice," said Kumar.
Last year, President Obama announced an Indo-US venture to predict the monsoons better. America is to give India access to its Climate Forecast System, which takes constant inputs from a fleet of satellites and radars and creates accurate computer simulations.
Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary Shailesh Nayak said, "If you are giving say six weather updates a day, then you have to get each update ready in a matter of four hours. To process such a large amount of data from satellites, radars etc efficiently, you will need a supercomputer."
An imported supercomputer could cost Rs 400 crore. EKA, India's fastest machine yet, clocks about one hundred teraflops. Wipro is building one at least twice as fast, for ISRO.

Opera opens mobile app store with Appia

Helsinki: Opera Software unveiled a deal with privately held Appia Inc to run a mobile software store for more than 100 million users of mobile browsers of the Norwegian firm.
Opera said in its testing state, the store had more than 15 million users in February, achieving more than 700,000 downloads per day, and establishing it among the top 10 mobile application stores globally.
Since Apple Inc's App Store opened in 2008 and created the market for mobile software sales, dozens of companies have opened their own stores.

Checked in lately? Foursquare revamps its app

New York: Foursquare, the smart phone service that lets you "check in" to restaurants, bars and wherever else you want to tell friends you're at, is trying to help you discover new places.
A new version of its application will include a new button, "explore," which replaces the current "tips" section.
Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley said the idea is to find things near you, including the unexpected. So Foursquare might recommend a new burrito joint based on your check-in history, or on what your friends like. A new search function, meanwhile, lets you type in keywords such as "margaritas outside" or "date night" and get suggestions for where to go.
Checked in lately? Foursquare revamps its app
The update, available for iPhones and Android phones Wednesday, will also let businesses offer new types of incentives, or "specials."
Businesses can already offer deals or discounts to loyal customers or new visitors. For example, a bar can offer its "mayor" - that is, the person who has checked in the most times - happy-hour prices at all times, a free appetizer or a drink special.
The update brings three new types of specials, bringing the total to seven. "Swarm specials" will let places offer special deals if a ton of people - say, 50 or 500 - check in all at once. "Flash specials" are quick-hit deals - such a free drink to the first 10 people to show up at a restaurant at a certain time. "Friends specials" are just that, deals you get when you bring a few extra guests to a venue.
Foursquare has also revamped its leaderboard, which lets users compete with one another by scoring points for check-ins. The current app has one, but it wasn't easily found and many people simply forgot about it.
The new leaderboard is displayed prominently on your Foursquare profile. Besides competing with friends, it lets you compete against your own high score. The goal is to reward you for checking in, even if you have little chance of becoming the "mayor" of your corner coffee shop. So now you'll get points for all kinds of activities, such as trying out new types of restaurants or visiting a place with a group of friends.
Two-year-old Foursquare has nearly 7.5 million users worldwide and adds about 35,000 new people each day. This has made it more difficult for users, especially those in densely populated areas, to reach the coveted "mayor" title.

36 killed in suicide blast in Peshawar

Peshawar:  A suicide bomber attacked a funeral attended by anti-Taliban militiamen in north-western Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least 36 mourners and wounding more than 100 others, police and hospital officials said.

The blast took place close to the city of Peshawar, not far from the tribally administered regions that border Afghanistan where militants are at their strongest.

The area is home to several tribal armies that battle the Taliban and receive government support for doing so.

Like elsewhere in the northwest, the militias have been relentlessly targeted by the insurgents.

Police officer Zahid Khan said around 300 people were attending the funeral for the wife a militiamen in the Matani area when the bomber struck.

TV footage showed men picking up bloodied sandals and caps from a dusty, open space where mourners had gathered.

Witnesses said the bomber, who appeared to be in his late teens, showed up at the funeral just as it was about to begin.

"We thought this youth was coming to attend the funeral, but he suddenly detonated a bomb," said survivor Syed Alam Khan.

Another witness, Farman Ullah, complained that they had not received any security from the government or police for the funeral. "It was the duty of the government to provide us security, but it did not do it," he said.

Jamal Shah, a doctor at the main hospital in Peshawar, said so far it had received 36 bodies and more than 100 wounded in the blast.

Al-Qaida and Taliban militants are waging a bloody war against the Pakistani state from their bases in the northwest.

The army has launched several offensives against the militants, but has also encouraged the formation of private armies to help out in the fight.

While the ceding of authority to armed civilians has alarmed human rights groups, the state has praised the role of the militias in battling the militants or holding ground retaken from them.

Police in Peshawar said late last year that the armies in Matani were essential in stopping militant infiltration into the city.

The militiamen operate from heavily fortified compounds in the region, and have seen their influence rise as they get state backing for taking on the Taliban. In interviews in December, commanders complained they were not getting enough government help, but claimed to have wrested Matani from militant control.

The army says it is winning the war against militants, but bombings still regularly occur in much of the country.

On Tuesday, at least 20 people were killed in a car bombing in Punjab province.

Libya official flies to Egypt with Gaddafi's message

Cairo:  A high-ranking member of the Libyan government landed in Cairo on Wednesday and embassy staff told Egyptian officials that he was carrying a message from embattled leader Moammar Gaddafi.

Gaddafi said in a Turkish television interview that Libyans would fight back if Western nations imposed a no-fly zone to prevent his regime from using its air force to bomb government opponents staging a rebellion.

He said imposing the restrictions would prove the West's real intention was to seize his country's oil wealth.

"Such a situation would be useful," Gaddafi said. "The Libyan people would understand their real aims to take Libya under their control, to take their freedoms and to take their oil and all Libyan people will take up arms and fight."

Hours later, Major General Abdul-Rahman bin Ali al-Saiid al-Zawi, the head of Libya's logistics and supply authority, arrived on a private jet, according to an Egyptian airport official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

The Falcon carrying al-Zawi took off from a small Libyan airport and flew through Maltese and Greek airspace before landing in Egypt, according to Greek civilian and military officials.

Greek state TV said the plane belongs to the Libyan government, but cited no source for its information.
There have been no public contacts between the Libyan regime and Egypt's ruling generals since the Libyan uprising broke out on Feb. 15, and there have been no known government-related flights during that time.

Gaddafi spoke with Turkey's state-run TRT Turk television late Tuesday after a surprise appearance at a hotel where foreign journalists are staying in Tripoli.

In separate remarks, he called on Libyans in the rebel-held east of the country to take back control from the Opposition leaders who have seized the territory.

Forces loyal to the Libyan leader have been fighting rebels in the east as well as in a handful of towns close to the capital Tripoli, where he has total control.

In the interview, Gaddafi was responding to US and British plans for action against his regime, including imposing a no-fly zone to prevent Gaddafi's warplanes from striking rebels.

Gaddafi claimed such a move would lead Libyans to understand that the foreigners' aim was to seize oil and take their freedom away. If that happened, he said, he "Libyans will take up arms and fight."

Libyan state television also broadcast remarks by Gaddafi addressing a group of youths from the town of Zintan, 75 miles (120 kilometres) southwest of Tripoli. Gaddafi again blamed Al-Qaida operatives from Egypt, Algeria, Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories for the turmoil roiling his country since February 15.

State television broadcast Gaddafi's address early on Wednesday, but did not say when the Libyan leader had spoken.

Gaddafi has been in power since 1969, when he led a military coup that topple the monarchy.

In the TRT Turk interview, Gaddafi said there were no legitimate grounds for a foreign intervention in his country, insisting that Libya was only fighting al-Qaida as in Afghanistan or Pakistan.

"If Al-Qaida seizes Libya, that will amount to a huge disaster," Gaddafi said. "If they (Al-Qaida fighters) take this place over, the whole region, including Israel, will be dragged into chaos. Then, (Al-Qaida leader Osama) Bin Laden may seize all of North Africa that faces Europe."
