New Delhi, March 9: The Netherlands recovered from a middle-order collapse to post a total of 189 all out in 46.4 overs against India in their World Cup tie at Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. At 127/7 at one stage, the Dutch innings was in shambles, but captain Peter Borren (38) led a late surge and together with Mudassar Bukhari (21) took the side within a whisker of 200. Zaheer Khan returned from a not-too-successful first spell to polish off the tail, finishing with figures of 3/20.
With the score at 84/2 at the halfway point in their innings, the Netherlands began to up the scoring rate just a tad. Ryan ten Doeschate and Tom Cooper each knocked a four off Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh respectively. But then Yuvraj foxed ten Doeschate who holed out to Zaheer Khan at long off. The batsman was on his way for 11 with the score at 99/3 in 28.2 overs. Cooper took a single later in the same over to bring up the Dutch 100.However, Ashish Nehra struck in the next over to remove the batsman for 29 off 47 balls and the Netherlands were in trouble at 100/4 with two new batsmen in Alexei Kervezee and Bas Zuiderent at the crease. But the latter batsman couldn't hold out against the pace of Zaheer and was trapped plumb in front for a duck as the Netherlands slumped to 101/5 in 31 overs. It seemed the Dutch were in the middle of a collapse as 7 runs later, Tom de Grooth was run out for 5 off 11 balls.
Captain Peter Borren and Kervezee launched a counter-offensive, but the Dutch slide continued. Chawla picked up his second wicket when he dismissed Kervezee for 11 off 23 balls. The Netherlands were 127/7 in 38.1 overs. Sensing the end of the innings was imminent, Borren went after the bowling, carting Yuvraj away for two fours in the 42nd over as the score moved to 147/7. But in the following over there was another run out. This time it was Bradley Kruger who was on his way for 8.
