Zaheer, spinners limit Netherlands to 189

New Delhi, March 9: The Netherlands recovered from a middle-order collapse to post a total of 189 all out in 46.4 overs against India in their World Cup tie at Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. At 127/7 at one stage, the Dutch innings was in shambles, but captain Peter Borren (38) led a late surge and together with Mudassar Bukhari (21) took the side within a whisker of 200. Zaheer Khan returned from a not-too-successful first spell to polish off the tail, finishing with figures of 3/20.
Piyush Chawla took 2/47 against the N'lands
With the score at 84/2 at the halfway point in their innings, the Netherlands began to up the scoring rate just a tad. Ryan ten Doeschate and Tom Cooper each knocked a four off Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh respectively. But then Yuvraj foxed ten Doeschate who holed out to Zaheer Khan at long off. The batsman was on his way for 11 with the score at 99/3 in 28.2 overs. Cooper took a single later in the same over to bring up the Dutch 100.However, Ashish Nehra struck in the next over to remove the batsman for 29 off 47 balls and the Netherlands were in trouble at 100/4 with two new batsmen in Alexei Kervezee and Bas Zuiderent at the crease. But the latter batsman couldn't hold out against the pace of Zaheer and was trapped plumb in front for a duck as the Netherlands slumped to 101/5 in 31 overs. It seemed the Dutch were in the middle of a collapse as 7 runs later, Tom de Grooth was run out for 5 off 11 balls.

Captain Peter Borren and Kervezee launched a counter-offensive, but the Dutch slide continued. Chawla picked up his second wicket when he dismissed Kervezee for 11 off 23 balls. The Netherlands were 127/7 in 38.1 overs. Sensing the end of the innings was imminent, Borren went after the bowling, carting Yuvraj away for two fours in the 42nd over as the score moved to 147/7. But in the following over there was another run out. This time it was Bradley Kruger who was on his way for 8.

The Netherlands were looking at the bottom of the barrel with the score at 151/8. But a defiant Borren pressed on, striking Chawla for two sixes to round off the 43rd over. Then Muddasar Bukhari got into the act, smashing Nehra for a six and a four. But Zaheer returned with a vengeance in the 47th over to first remove Borren for a fighting 38 off 36 balls and then Bukhari for 21 off 18. The Dutch were all out for 189 in 46.4 overs.

The Netherlands had kick-started their innings with some aggressive batting. Wesley Barresi struck the first four in the second over, off Ashish Nehra. Then Eric Szwarczynski went after Zaheer Khan, smacking him for one boundary in the 3rd over and two in the fifth as the Dutch raced to 26/0 in 5 overs.

The off-spin off Yusuf Pathan and Harbhajan Singh was introduced early, putting a check on the scoring rate. In 10 overs, the score read 38/0 with Bhajji and Yusuf still pummeling away at the batsmen. Then, two overs later, Piyush Chawla was brought into the attack and in the 16th over, bowled Szwarczynski for 28 off 42. The Netherlands were 56/1 in 15.2 overs.

Yuvraj compounded their woes when in the 19th over, he trapped Baressi in front for 26 off 58 as the score now read 64/2. Then Tom Cooper ans Ryan ten Doeschate pushed the ball around for one and twos to take the score to 84/2 in 25 overs.
