Asus confirmed Wednesday that it has started rolling out Android 4.0 for its Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablet. The update was long in coming for the tablet that was the predecessor of the popular quad-core powered Asus Transformer Prime. As recently as Tuesday, Asus announced it was holding off from rolling out the Android 4.0 update although it would be done in the February/March period.
After the Asus Transformer Prime received its update to Ice Cream Sandwich in January, Asus said that the Asus Eee Pad Transformer would receive the Android 4.0 update by the end of last month. That was moved to the beginning and then the middle of this month. And despite a number of new products that Asus plans on revealing during next week's MWC in Barcelona, the company says it will always support its older devices.
So why was there such a delay in getting Ice Cream Sandwich running on the older tablet? One theory is that since the Asus Transformer Prime shipped with a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 under the hood, performance optimizations for the Tegra 3 might have made it easier to update the OS on the tablet when compared with the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 that powers the older Asus Eee Pad Transformer.
