Tizen is one of the biggest emerging platforms outside the major three - iOS, Android and Windows Phone. The operating system uses MeeGo for its base and is backed up by big names like Samsung and Intel.
What’s more Samsung has said it wants to integrate its bada OS with Tizen, and now the platform has got another backer - Chinese Huawei.
“We are very happy to join fellow industry leaders on the Board of Tizen Association. Our ongoing goal is to work closely with our customers and partners to bring truly innovative handset propositions to consumers in all markets and the new Tizen ecosystem complements our existing areas of focus and provides fresh opportunity for tremendously strengthening Huawei’s brand name in the mobile segment” Glory Zhang, spokesperson, Huawei Device
Tizen focuses on web apps which will have much more access to native phone features. Web applications will get system information and could even set an alarm for you. We can only imagine the possibility of truly interconnected devices with Tizen, and that’s what fascinates us about the platform.
Otherwise, it’s fairly standard and uninspiring with simplistic, bada-like looks, but Tizen is still in its early development stages, so things can change.
The platform has added support for Windows in its SDK, which will hopefully increase the number of engaged developers.
Acer and Asus are both said to be considering Tizen as their future platform, so keep an eye on it - it might be what’s powering your handset in a couple of years.
