Damascus: The death toll in Syria's uprising against President Bashar Assad continued to rise on Saturday as security forces opened fire on funeral processions, killing at least twelve people around the country.
Witnesses said security forces killed four people in Douma, a suburb of the capital.
The witness account could not be independently confirmed because Syria has expelled journalists and restricted access to trouble spots. They spoke on condition of
anonymity for fear of reprisals.
Still pictures taken from a mobile phone and acquired by the Associated Press showed a funeral procession in the city of Izraa.
AP Television has no way of independently verifying the authenticity of the stills.
The photos showed respectively a man holding up a bloodied hand, Syrian anti-government protesters carrying a poster of a slain activist, protesters marching during the funeral procession, and two angles of protesters holding a bloodied national flag.
Friday was the deadliest day of the uprising, with at least 76 people killed as Syrian security forces fired bullets and tear gas at tens of thousands of protesters
across the country.
On Saturday, Syrian activists said two members of parliament have resigned in protest against the killing of protesters.
The two legislators who resigned are from Daraa, a southern region that unleashed the protest movement in mid-March.
Activists in touch with the lawmakers confirmed the resignations.
They asked that their names not be used for fear of reprisals.
