Sachin sizzles, but India implode for 338

Bangalore, Feb 27: In the 11th match of the World Cup 2011, India stumbled to 338 all out against England in their 50 overs, losing a flurry of wickets at the end. After Sachin Tendulkar did the ground work by scoring a scintillating 120 off 114 and Gautam Gambhir (51) and Yuvraj Singh (58) played a good hand, India's latter order collapsed to some tight stump-to-stump bowling from pacer Tim Bresnan, who picked up 5/48.
Sachin Tendulakr made 120 off 114 balls
After crossing the half-way mark at 140/1, India upped the ante with Tendulkar carting a hapless off-break Graeme Swann for two consecutive sixes to bring up India's 150. In the next over, he smacked Ahmed Shahzad for a four to move onto 76 off 82 balls. Then Tendulkar attacked James Anderson, getting him away for two consecutive boundaries for the second time in the match before Gautam Gambhir helped himself to another four off the fast bowler.

But there was some respite for the English when Swann bowled Gambhir in the next over. The batsman was on his way for 51 off 61 balls, but India were still in a mighty strong position at 180/2 in 29.4 overs.

In the 33rd over, Tendulkar touched Michael Yardy fine for a four to move onto 94. At the end of 34 overs, India had moved to 200. In the very next over, Tendulkar tickled Bresnan for a four fine to bring up his 47th ODI century. He had made 102 off 103 balls with 4 sixes and 8 fours.

With that landmark out of the way, India kicked on. Tendulkar and Yuvraj flayed a six and four, respectively off Grame Swann. Then with India taking the batting powerplay, Yuvraj cut loose striking Tim Bresnan for a four before Tendulkar pulled the same bowler for another boundary.

But in the 38th over, Sachin's brilliant innings came to a quiet end when he got a leading edge off Anderson to get snapped by Yardy in the covers. The Little Master was out for 120 off 114 balls and India were 236/3 in 38.2 overs.

Yuvraj and M S Dhoni then buckled down to the task at hand - getting India as many runs as possible in the last 11 overs. After Dhoni smoked Yardy for another boundary and scampered a single, India were 247/3 in 40 overs. Then Dhoni ran a single off Bresnan to bring up India's 250 in 40.4 overs. The batting duo then took 11 runs off Yardy in the 42nd over.

They followed that bumper over with another, taking 15 runs off Shahzad, including three fours, as India moved onto 277/3 in 43 overs. Yuvraj shrugged off his scratchy form coming into the tournament, by striking Shahzad for two fours in the 45th over to bring up his 50.

India had crept up to 292/3 in 45 overs. Dhoni then carted Dhoni for a six to bring up India's 300 and two balls later, struck him for a four. But Yuvraj at the other end, had run out of steam, holing out to Ian Bell in the deep. Dhoni followed Yuvraj back to the shed immediately, getting out to Shahzad for 31 off 25 balls. India were 305/5 in 46.1 overs.

With Pathan and Virat Kohli at the crease, one got the sense that an surge was in the offing. The two took 9 runs off the 47th over. Pathan then sent Anderson for a six in the 48th over and took a total of 13 runs off the over.

But then Tim Bresnan struck to remove Pathan (14), Kohli (8) and Harbhjajan (0) in 4 balls as India stumbled to 329/8. 9 runs came off the last over and two runs-outs, those of Praveen Chawla for 2 and Zaheer Khan for 4. India were bowled out for 339 in 49.5 overs.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Indian got off to an flying start. But there was drama in the first ball, with Sehwag edging James Anderson just past Graeme Swann at slip for a third-man boundary. Then twice more in the over, Sehwag got leading edges, both times just evading fielders. The batsman began the second over with a more confident shot, cover-driving Ahmed Shahzad for a boundary and then repeating the shot three balls later.

Then in the 5th over, Sehwag cut Anderson away for another boundary. In the 7th over, he took two more fours off Anderson, but the second was a fortuitous shot, getting the toe-end of the bat and just beating the fielder at mid-on. But toward the end of the 9th over, Bresnan ghot the breakthrough when he had Sehwag caught behind for 35 off 26 balls. India were 46/1 in 8.5 overs.

However, Tendulkar kept the momentum going, striking Anderson for two consecutive fours to take the score past 50 in the 10th over. After luck had saved Sehwag a couple of times in his brief innings, it began to favour Gambhir as Matt Prior missed a stumping opportunity off Graeme Swann in the 14th over, the ball squeezing through for a four.

Tendulkar brought up India's 100 in an ermpatic manner - carting Paul Collingwood for a straight six. India were 103/1 in 18 overs. The Little Master then notched up his fifty by lofting Collingwood for another maximum.
